Lady Diana, the men she loved
William and Harry were forced to downsize the inauguration ceremony of the statue of Diana on the first of July, on the occasion of his 60th birthday. So, no longer a big party with a hundred guests, but a small event with few friends. This is due to the Covid emergency, since infections are increasing in England.
The presentation of the statue of Diana, who died prematurely in 1997 in an accident of which she had a tragic premonition, was also meant to be the occasion for a face-to-face meeting between William and Harry. Relations between the two brothers are still very tense and not even the return of Carlo’s second son for the funeral of his grandfather Filippo has smoothed things out. Indeed, according to reports from the Daily Mail that William, Carlo and Kate Middleton they didn’t want to talk officially with Harry for fear of his reaction once back in the US.
In fact, from the latest rumors it would seem that Harry agreed to do the bombshell interview with Oprah Winfrey just after learning that his military titles would be removed as a result of the Megxit. Hence, it was an uncontrolled outburst that led the Prince to hurl public accusations against his family.
Harry should already be in England, at Frogmore Cottage where he is being quarantined. With the ceremony on July 1st, the two brothers would have had to put aside their grudges to welcome together a hundred friends, former collaborators of Diana, relatives. But all this will not take place. There will only be a small meeting with Diana’s family and children.
In the statement in which William and Harry announced the cancellation of the inauguration due to Covid, we read that the extended ceremony is postponed in September. A bitter disappointment for many of Diana’s circle who hoped with their presence to help the two brothers to reconcile.
For their part, the Princes have reassured that their differences will not cloud what they believe must be a ceremony in honor of Diana and her charitable work. A lot of bad things have happened since William and Harry announced the making of the mother statue. Initially, the work was to be ready for 2017, on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of Lady D’s death, but there were problems with the project. The statue was not intended to become a sanctuary.
In 2018 it was ready, but in that year the marriage between Harry and Meghan Markle was fixed, then the Megxit and the pandemic. Until July 1, 2021. And here too the umpteenth obstacle with the postponement of the extended inauguration. Donors including Elton John and David Furnish are invited to the September party along with other friends and family, but there is no guarantee Harry will be there.
