Queen Elizabeth alone at Trooping the Color: a party in half
In his nearly 70 years of reign, Elizabeth II has surprised the English people several times and beyond, showing that that aura of impenetrability – in exceptional circumstances of course – could be scratched. He did it just recently, responding to the letter of condolences of two little sisters from Belluno, who deeply affected by the death of Prince Philip, have decided to show their closeness to the Sovereign of England.
Elisa and Sofia, these are the names of the two girls, they are 7 and 4 years old and they learned about the story of Queen Elizabeth thanks to the vision of a cartoon. So the two little sisters, after learning of the Prince’s death, they wanted to send a message full of affection to the Sovereign, accompanied by some drawings depicting Elizabeth in the company of her beloved Philip.
Her Majesty, we are two girls of 7 and 4, who live in Italy, in the Dolomites. We met you through a beautiful cartoon about you and your husband. We have learned that your beloved husband, Prince Philip, is dead. We are very sad and sorry for this. For this reason, we would like to hug you and pray for you and for Prince Philip. Your little fans, Elisa and Sofia.
It seems that the letter of the two little girls did not go unnoticed e hit the heart of Queen Elizabeth: after a few weeks in fact – with the disbelief of the whole family – Elisa and Sofia received an answer from Her Majesty, who sent a letter of thanks to the two girls:
I send you my sincere thanks for your kind words of closeness for the death of my husband. Elizabeth R.
It is not the first time that the Queen responds to letters from little admirers: a few years ago Elisabetta had sent a letter of thanks to a 9-year-old Emilian fan, who had sent her drawings and a letter asking to be able to meet her.
Obviously the two little sisters from Belluno they greatly appreciated the Queen’s gesture, as his mother told Corriere del Veneto:
They are so small and naive that when Prince Philip died they said to me: ‘Mom we absolutely have to write to you, poor thing.’ (…) When the answer came they were beside themselves with joy. There was the seal of the Crown, they couldn’t believe it. It was a beautiful gesture from the English Crown and I can say it made my little princesses happy.
