Lady Diana, the men she loved
Almost 24 years have passed since the death of Lady Diana, disappeared in 1997 in an accident in Pont de L’Alma tunnel. In that terrible crash they lost their lives Dodi Al-Fayed, fiancé of the Princess of Wales, and the driver Henri Paul. Both died instantly, while Dodi’s bodyguard Trevor Rees-Jones, who was in the front seat – the only one with a seat belt – was seriously injured, but managed to survive.
When help arrived, Diana was still alive. It was freed with difficulty from the tangle of metal sheets and transported to thePitié-Salpêtrière hospital by ambulance. When William and Harry’s mother arrived at the facility she was very serious, but the doctors tried everything to save her. Two hours later, due to internal injuries, she was pronounced dead.
Many years have passed since that tragic accident that shocked the world. William and Harry, who were very close to their mother, have never forgotten him, and like them MonSef Dahman, the doctor who tried to save Diana. He was only 33 at the time and was a general surgeon serving at the Pitié-Salpêtrière Hospital in Paris. All this time the doctor has never given interviews, only in these days, for the first time, he wanted to remember those tragic moments in an interview with the Daily Mail.
“That day I started at 8 in the morning – he recalled -, and I was still on duty after midnight: it had been a fairly quiet day. I was resting when suddenly the anesthetist Bruno Riou calls me and tells me to run to the emergency room. He didn’t tell me that Lady Diana was there, just that there had been a serious accident involving a young woman ”.
Years have passed, but MonSef Dahman still remembers everything with precision: “It took only a moment to make clear the reason for all that frenzy – he revealed -. For any surgeon, it is very important to try to save a young woman in those conditions. But surely she is even more so if she is a princess ”.
MonSef explained that that tragic night the doctors would be looking in every way to save Diana, but that a cardiac arrest would take the princess away, making all attempts to revive her useless. “We tried a lot, a lot – he said -. We have done everything possible for this young woman. When you work in these conditions you don’t notice the time passing
On July 1st, Harry and William will unveil a statue dedicated to Lady Diana. A way to remember the princess and to honor her memory on the occasion of her 60th birthday. Even the surgeon who tried to save her revealed of never have forgotten it. Those tragic and tense moments will never disappear from his mind: “The thought of having lost an important person you cared about, marks you for life – he clarified -. When she is a princess and you attend her funeral along with billions of other people, and you tried to save her, that obviously marks you. It marks you throughout your life ”.
