Lady Diana, the men she loved
The tragic accident and the last words of Lady Diana before dying. Years have passed since that terrible night in 1997 when William and Harry’s mom lost her life. The princess, who was only 36 years old, was in a Mercedes driven by driver Henri Paul. The car, in which he was traveling with his companion at the time, Dodi Al-Fayed, shattered against the thirteenth pillar in the Pont de l’Alma tunnel in Paris.
A terrible crash in which Dodi Al-Fayed and the driver Henri Paul died instantly. To save himself, despite suffering very serious injuries, was instead Dodi’s bodyguard, Trevor Rees-Jones, who was sitting in the front seat. Diana did not die in the impact and when help arrived she was still alive. As the Sergeant Xavier Gourmelon, among the firefighters rushed for free Diana from the sheets and transport her to the hospital where, unfortunately, she would die at 4 in the morning.
The man said he arrived on the place of the accident without knowing who the woman he was trying to save was. “When they told me who she was I recognized her, but I didn’t at the time,” he recalled. Interviewed by the Daily Mail he explained: “Diana moved and spoke. He spoke in English and said, ‘Oh my God, what happened?’ I could understand it, so I tried to calm her down. I held her hand ”. Everything would last a few moments. Gourmelon said he held Diana’s hand, listening to what, unfortunately, were her last words.
The doctor who gave her the first treatment, Frederic Mailliez, explained that Diana had no serious injuries on her face. “She was sitting on the floor in the back… she was a beautiful woman and she had no serious face injuries,” he explained. Later William and Harry’s mum was equipped with a breathing mask, isothermal blanket and cervical collar, before being transported to the hospital. The rest is history: the attempts to revive her in the hospital and death, which came after hours of hope. Many years have passed since then, but no one has ever forgotten the princess, her sweet smile and cruel fate.
