Charlene herself, mother of the two twins Jacques and Gabriella, experienced firsthand an episode that could have turned into a tragedy: her daughter, when she was younger, approached the edge of a swimming pool to retrieve a toy that fell into the water and risked losing his balance. “I still tremble at the thought of what could have happened if I hadn’t seen it in time ”- revealed the Princess in an interview with Point de Vue magazine.
A unfortunately very common accident, as the numbers announce: in the last 10 years, about 2.5 million people have lost their lives due to drowning. The wife of Prince Albert, also strong in her past as a swimmer, wanted to address this issue through the Fondation Princesse Charlene, which since 2012 has been dealing with women and children in difficulty through sport. For several years now his commitment has been dedicated to the dangers of water, favoring the teaching of swimming and thus helping to save many lives.
More than 120,000 people, mostly children, learned to swim and received water safety lessons thanks to the work of the Foundation and its partners. And in recent days Charlene has achieved a new, very important victory: the UN has adopted its first resolution on the prevention of drowning, urging the signatories to raise public awareness and develop a national strategy to reduce deaths in water . An enormous commitment, which aims to fight what the United Nations has defined as one “Silent epidemic”.
According to the data, the drowning is one of the top ten causes of death for children between the ages of 5 and 14, and 90% of cases occur in low- or middle-income countries. Therefore the efforts of the Princess Charlene they are so important: his battle against this deadly enemy continues unabated, always taking new steps forward.
