Raise your hand all the lefties who are reading us, the left means, because it is to them that the international day which falls every 13th August is dedicated. It matters little that because of superstition in the past they were discriminated against, and that at home and school these were corrected, as if theirs were a problem to be solved. Science confirms that they have a gear more and the left-handed of history confirm it.
Albert Einstein, Leonardo da Vinci, Van Gogh and Jimi Hendrix are just some of the characters who made history and who used the left hand. But no impediment for them. Indeed, looking at their lives we can agree with science when it says that left-handers have an edge.
But what is left-handedness? This term identifies all the people who have a tendency to use the left side of the body, totally or partially, to perform actions or movements. Not only the hand, therefore, but also the eye and ears, for example.
It happens that, if in right-handed people the processing of language takes place in the right hemisphere, in that of left-handers both hemispheres of the brain are involved. But this feature does not make them problematic, nor weaker, indeed.
Yet not too long ago, everything was done to correct the children and make them right-handed. The reasons were different, one of which was rooted in superstition: if it is true that the right hand is the one that blesses, the left hand is the one that blesses. belongs to the devil. To foment the belief, also the fact that the Christian religion preferred the right side.
Fortunately, things have changed and, today, left-handers they are no longer associated with the devilnor corrected for this diversification. Of course, there are still many small daily difficulties they encounter: the handles of scissors, for example, are designed for right-handers. As well as the door handles or the POS on which to swipe the credit card and, again, even the table is often set without taking into account left-handed people. Because they are a small minority of the world population.
But despite these small difficulties, we can loudly say that left-handers are doing great and, indeed, according to science they have an extra gear. A research from the University of Toledo, in fact, has brought out some really interesting data on left-handers: they would have a more developed memory than the others. And they would get excellent results and also improve in some sports like tennis, fencing and boxing.
There are so many reasons to be proud. And if that wasn’t enough, the International left-handed day in 1992 from the Left Handers Club. The goal? Raise public awareness and start designing a world that is also left-handed.
