That Kamala Harris she would have been an out-of-the-box Vice President was evident from the election campaign and already with the victory speech she had given us a taste of what her battles would be.
But seeing her marching at Washington DC’s Capital Pride is beyond all expectations (and hope repaid). The Vice President of the United States made history once again by taking to the streets alongside thousands of Americans along with her husband, Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff.
Salmon-colored blazer and white t-shirt with the words Love is love, Kamala Harris expressed all her support for the cause while also giving a small speech to make it clear how the rights of the LGBTQ + community are dear to the Biden administration: “We must make it clear to everyone that our transgender community and our young people are protected. There is still a lot of work to be done, but we are all involved, ”he said.
An involvement that the Vice President had already expressed on Twitter recalling the shooting that took place on June 12, 2016 in a gay club in Orlando in which 49 people died.
“Five years ago 49 LGBTQ + people and their friends were having fun on one of the nights at Pulse Nightclub. And in an instant they left us. Today we remember those who have died and their loved ones and pledge once again to build a world free from the violence of firearms, ”he wrote.
The decision to march through the streets of Washington has a very strong symbolic and political weight: it is the first Vice President in history to do so. Another record for her, but a very important gesture for the whole LGBTQ + community that finally feels that their struggles have not been in vain and that their requests finally have an ear (even more than one) that listens to them.
One of the first documents Biden signed once he was elected was an order to put an end to all forms of discrimination based on gender identity or sexual orientation: “All children should be free to learn without having to worry about being denied access to toilets, locker rooms or school sports. All adults should be able to earn a living by following their calling, knowing that they will not be fired, demoted or mistreated on the basis of who is waiting for them at home or because they dress in a way that does not conform to stereotypes based on sex. People should be able to access health care and secure a roof over their heads without suffering discrimination, ”it reads.
Words that give hope for a fairer world and that, thanks also to Kamala’s gesture, we hope they can really be realized.
