It is seventeen years of marriage for Felipe of Spain and Letizia Ortiz. The two represent one of the most popular royal couples in the world: their story seems like a fairy tale and, together, they managed to build a family founded on solid foundations, and above all, on love and respect. And if their union seems to be perfect, the same cannot be said of their wedding. On the day of the yes, in fact, they had to face several unforeseen events.
If you think back to the wedding day of the Spanish Royals, celebrated on May 22, 2004, the first thing that comes to mind is probably the wonderful dress worn by Letizia. White, imposing, signed Pertegaz, however, it ran the risk of being ruined even before entering the Almudena cathedral in Madrid, because of every bride’s nightmare: bad weather. Just as Ortiz walked the few steps that kept her away from her future husband, she had to shelter from a merciless rain that was falling.
The rain has also caused gods delays at the start of the party and, above all, the rich banquet prepared by one of the most prestigious restaurants in Madrid. Apparently, some guests, such as Prince Charles of England, even greeted the bride and groom before they even finished tasting the entire menu, consisting of 17 courses of typical Hispanic dishes, for fear of missing the flight.
To make the day even more difficult, Letizia’s health conditions. A few days after the wedding, in fact, Ortiz was hit by a severe sore throat and fever which, a few hours after the important event had not yet passed.
Some unexpected events also during the celebration. It was caused by Felipe Juan Froilán de Todos los Santos, son of Infanta Elena and Jaime de Marichalar. Today a young rebel, at the time a child and a pageboy, during the ceremony he began to annoy the bridesmaids, diverting attention from the bride and groom.
In short, it cannot be said that Felipe and Letizia’s wedding was perfect and fairytale: to frame, just like it happens in all marriages, family quarrels, discontent, petty theft of silverware and a few glasses too many for some guests. Their love, however, allowed them to overcome not only the annoying unexpected events of that day, but also the highest obstacles.
