In the night between 17 and 18 May 2015 Marco Vannini is killed with a pistol shot in his fiancée’s family home. The reconstruction is confused and disordered and casts shadows and mysteries on the whole affair, between the desperation and pain of mother Marina and all those people close to Marco.
Weeks and months go by and amidst desperate appeals from Marina Vannini and her husband Valerio asking for justice for their son, we arrive at May 2021. Six years have passed and only now, thanks to the final sentence of the Supreme Court, the young twenty year old from Cerveteri will be able to rest in peace.
Between a long applause in the classroom and the joy of one justice that took place after a long, long time, the definitive sentences for the murder of Vannini of Antonio Ciontoli, his wife Maria Pezzillo and their children Federico and Martina have been confirmed. A complex and painful judicial affair that did not see winners, but only losers. After all, all that she asked for in these 6 long years, mother Marina, was only the truth and justice for her son, whose life was broken too soon.
A mother who was expecting, as she always did since Marco was engaged to Martina, the return of the son home, to hug and kiss him, to go back to being a family. And instead that son has never returned. And the last memory of his Marco is linked to that phone call, to that painful request for help. The young man was dying and nothing was done to save him. Marina also died a little with him, or at least the biggest part of her heart.
Meanwhile, the years go by and April 14, 2018 Antonio Ciontoli is sentenced to 14 years for voluntary murderwhile the rest of his family comes from manslaughter. The judges had observed that “Ciontoli has consciously and repeatedly avoided the activation of immediate aid to avoid harmful consequences in the workplace”, being a marshal of the Navy and enlisted in the RUD. On appeal, however, the sentence is reduced to 5 years.
A sentence that unleashes the anger of the parents of the young Vannini and that is challenged by the public prosecutor of Rome, which instead supports the thesis of voluntary murder with possible malice. Now the Supreme Court has issued the final sentence e Marina can stop fighting.
“Last week I dreamed of it: she told me ‘mom everything will go as it should go” – the woman confessed to the journalists present outside the courtroom – “I didn’t even tell my husband. It was beautiful, it was by the sea. We fought for 6 years, the fear is always there but we believed in it until the end ”.
It was a very long and painful journey that added to the already traumatic elaboration of such an important bereavement in a woman’s life. Why should no mother part with a child like this. And in these years that have passed since the tragedy, which marked the family, but also the whole of Italy, she never spoke of revenge, mother Marina, but only of justice.
And today, when Antonio Ciontoli was definitively sentenced to 14 years for voluntary murder and his family members to nine years and 4 months for anomalous complicity, that justice has been done.
