Singers, painters, musicians and artists have dedicated to the largest expanses of water in the globe their most beautiful works. Because among the white and candid ripples of the waves and the whirling and wild movements, it is possible to observe all the sweetness and strength of nature. And to fix, apparently, a precise point of infinity. It is not so difficult to understand why watching the sea and the ocean makes us feel good.
We all owe our lives to it, and not only because it allows us to activate the Blue Mind and find peace, but because it is thanks to the ocean that we breathe and live. Thanks to him and the balance of creatures that populate it, the biodiversity of ecosystems, the economy linked to all the seas.
Yet not only do we not thank our blue lung but we do worse: we mistreat and ignore it, forgetting its importance too often. Because if on the one hand the awareness of live green it is spreading widely, on the other hand nobody thinks about the importance of “blue”. but yet the oceans need us too, Today more than ever.
We all dream of a life with a view of the sea, but living on dry land we forget that the 71% of the earth’s surface is covered by the ocean. This percentage should make us understand that ours is not Planet Earth, but the Planet of the oceans. And looking at the globe from afar, we can understand it immediately.
The ocean represents 90% of the planet’s living space and protects us, but we don’t protect it. Because as we fly to space and dream of colonize Mars, we don’t realize the precious treasure we have. And this is demonstrated by the fact that only 5% of the ocean floor has been explored. Everything else, on the other hand, is only exploited and polluted: every year almost 10 million tons of plastic end up in the sea. Not to mention that this inevitably suffers the effects of global warming.
This is why World Oceans Day was born on 8 June. An anniversary established in 1992 by The Ocean Project and the World Ocean Network, and recognized by the UN since 2008, which aims to remember how precious the seas and oceans are for us, to produce oxygen, absorb CO2 and nourish the whole humanity.
Every two breaths we take we owe to the oceans. Let’s save them!
