Mother’s Day, which is celebrated this year on May 9th, is the perfect opportunity to support Alzheimer’s research and to defeat breast cancer.
In addition to the AIRC Research Azalea, there are many initiatives put in place for a more conscious Mother’s Day aimed at women’s health.
Breast Cancer Prevention
Starting with breast cancer prevention supported by the Valter Longo Onlus Foundation which offers on 19 May from 10.00 to 13.00 and from 14.00 to 17.00, free nutritional interviews.
Born in 2017 from the will of Valter Longo, internationally renowned philanthropist and biogerontologist, Valter Longo Foundation realizes Nutritional Assistance paths based on the Longevity Diet, a powerful tool to prevent and slow down the onset of important diseases related to advancing age or non-communicable – including diabetes, obesity, cardiovascular and autoimmune diseases – and in particular of tumors and of the breast cancer. And precisely 2020 was particularly crucial for Professor Longo’s team to unravel the effects and mechanism of fasting on cancer, once again demonstrating the power of controlled fasting on pathologies.
These are the three recommendations of the Foundation to prevent breast cancer, even at the table:
Pescetarian Longevity Diet and 100% vegetable
Reduce protein intake at a frequency of 1 or 2 times a week, in a quantity of 0.7 grams per kilo of body weight, favoring fish, preferably small oily fish, anchovies, mackerel, to avoid risk that high percentages of mercury may be present. Get all other nutrients from plant sources, avoiding cheese, meat, milk and chicken.
Away the sugars, minimize pasta and bread
Cutting down on sugars and eating starchy foods such as pasta and bread only occasionally and in low quantities is essential for keeping blood sugar levels under control at all times.
Low-calorie vegetable diet every three months
The studies conducted by Professor Valter Longo – Director of the Oncology and Longevity Program of IFOM (Firc Institute of Molecular Oncology) in Milan and Director of the Longevity Institute of the USC (University of Southern California) Davis School of Gerontology in Los Angeles – have tested the effectiveness of the program that mimics fasting, that is a low-calorie 100% vegetable diet, demonstrating that in experimental animal models it is as powerful as chemotherapy, but at the same time it protects healthy tissues and organs. It also reduces the incidence of cancer by nearly 50%. That is why it is so important to undergo this type of diet for five days every three months if weight and abdominal circumference are ideal, once a month if they are not, always after a discussion with a doctor or nutritionist biologist.
Alzheimer’s research
The recent COVID 19 pandemic, which mainly affected the elderly and the most “fragile” people, has highlighted the importance of research in general, but also the need to have less “vulnerable” elderly people and certainly dementias make them so. In Italy, over a million people suffer from Alzheimer’s and other types of dementia and with them – indirectly between family members and caregivers – about 3 million people are involved.
On the occasion of Mother’s Day Airalzh the field comes down with Coop in support of research on Alzheimer’s disease: on May 9 it is possible to buy a Mini Calla: for each plant sold, 1 euro will in fact be donated to Airalzh to support the scientific efforts carried out by the non-profit organization and the its researchers.
