The Moon and our health
As the sea responds to the moon with high and low tides, so are we affected by lunar movements, being mainly composed of water within our cells. The moon affects our physiological movements and our emotions. People defined as lunatic are prone to often change their minds, to sudden mood changes and drastic changes on an emotional level. Something “acts” in the belly and confuses, obscures, makes you lose clarity even temporarily. It is also about people who on the other hand are extremely intuitive, sensitive and empathic.
The phases of the moon act on four fundamental neurotransmitters: serotonin, dopamine, acetylcholine and noradrenaline. When the moon is not visible in our skies, light acts differently on the predominant neurotransmitters in our brains. In the early stages of the lunar cycle there is a greater sensitivity, a large dose of energy and also the desire to be with others and share. Alongside this energy dose, there is a greater predisposition to new ideas and projects. Acetylcholine predisposes us to learn new things, to study, to discover and in this phase it is activated in an important way. As the moon grows, serotonin increases significantly which links to personal satisfaction, fulfillment, but also to moments of profound revision that could be accompanied by a sense of nostalgia and potential disappointment. This empathic charge increases significantly when the moon reaches hers fullness phase and here dopamine is the protagonist, increasing our desire to have fun, distract us. When the moon goes down, the tendency towards two opposite extremes increases, which can go to the side of fragility or aggression. It is to all intents and purposes a conclusive, decisive phase, a “drawing up a balance”.
Surely the population is divided with some ease between skeptics and people who tend to think about how the moon affects our health. Certainly the incidence of crimes and accidents increases as does an increase in epileptic attacks during the full moon. Surely the light of the full moon it also creates a demonstrable physiological level of a greater excitability index.
The vegetable garden, the skin, sleep and hair
Following the cultivation times even dedicating oneself to a small personal garden represents a very therapeutic form of self-care. Surely the phases of the moon also influence the way we take care of ourselves, as traditional calendars suggest; you know that in the waning moon for example, fats, liquids and toxins are better eliminated. It is the ideal time to cleanse the skin of impurities, to carry out draining treatments and to purify yourself. We also know that deciding to cut hair for both men and women has an important value, it always means a change and doing it by observing the moon phases allows us to understand if the hair will grow faster or not. In general, the crescent moon it is good for removing unwanted hair, cutting nails or hair cutting if slow regrowth is desired. Those who want to trim their hair but make it grow should opt for a waning moon cut (from full moon to new moon).
Regarding sleep, a research from the University of Basel, Switzerland, investigates the influence of the Moon on the perception of sleep. During the days closest to the full moon, for example, brain activity related to deep sleep is reduced by 30%; it takes longer to fall asleep and sleeps less deeply.
The woman, the moon, childbirth
In ancient traditions, the Moon also has an influence on childbirth. In ancient times it was thought that with the crescent moon a male would be easily conceived, while in the case of the waning moon a female. They were ancient beliefs linked to the phase of illumination but in some way linked to the fact that the baby remains in a “water bubble” for the entire time of gestation and this amniotic fluid is affected by the movements of the moon.
The woman is extremely influenced by the Moon and it is no coincidence that there is an almost perfect coincidence between the female menstrual cycle, which usually lasts 28 days, and the duration of the so-called lunar month, of 29 days. Even symbolically, the “awakened” woman in the fullness of her power has lunar characteristics par excellence, extrasensory intuitions. Even in the famous tarot symbols, the Moon brings back to femininity, to the mother, to sleep and to the dream dimension. Doing small lunar rituals, lighting candles, observing even just simply the light of the Moon allows you to connect to its energy and go inside, rebalance yourself, give yourself a center and move from that. In general the Moon means transformation, changing order, alchemical force. The Moon is linked to the movement of water and therefore to our emotional balance; we can connect with nature and celestial forces to find our balance at any time or even just to explore what is moving inside us.
