We know well how important nutrition is for our health: eating well helps us stay fit and lose those extra pounds, especially in view of the hot season, but it is also the best way to preserve our well-being and to slow down the aging of the skin.
Well yes, what we bring to the table has a lot to do with health of our skin. Over time, the latter in fact loses tone and compactness, taking on a dull complexion and dryness that are difficult to combat. Diet can help us: as explained by the Dr. Elisabetta Bernardi, nutritionist and food science specialist, as well as a member of the scientific board of Sustainable Meat, there are many foods that are allies of the beauty (and youth) of the skin.
Among anti-aging foods there are naturally seasonal fruits and vegetables, rich in antioxidants, nuts, oilseeds and fish, the latter with an important content of omega-3 fatty acids that counteract numerous skin problems. But also meat and its derivatives can be very useful: these products are in fact an excellent source of substances such as iron, zinc, selenium and the famous coenzyme Q10, which slows down the skin aging process. In our in-depth study, you will find all the information for your anti-aging diet.
Of course, when we talk about proper nutrition we can’t help but keep that in mind one of the main goals is to lose weight. Sometimes, there is no need to undergo strict diets that impose great sacrifices on us, but it may be enough to adopt some stratagem. For example, white sugar is a particularly caloric food that we overuse too often. We can replace it with erythritol, a natural sweetener with numerous beneficial properties for health.
We talked about it with Dr. Chiara Manzi, nutritionist and author of the book Cucina Evolution. In form without diet (Art joins nutrition editor): “It is an excellent and healthy alternative to the classic cooking sugar”. Erythritol, compared to an important sweetening power, is almost completely free of calories and it does not affect glucose and insulin levels in the blood. It also has antioxidant properties and is a portentous ally for oral health.
To protect kidney function, on the other hand, there are several measures that have to do with the diet. There Dr. Franca Pasticci, dietician at the UOC of Nephrology and Dialysis of the USL 1 Umbria highlights how the choice of what we eat and drink is fundamental to prevent kidney diseases – and even more so for those who already suffer from these diseases, of course. Is very important drink at least 2 liters of water a day to eliminate toxins and reduce salt consumption, which greatly affects blood pressure.
A balanced diet based on the principles of Mediterranean diet is the best choice. We must pay attention to the amount of protein in order not to overload the kidney work, while keeping the levels of phosphorus and potassium: the two minerals are in fact eliminated through the kidneys, and if these do not work properly it is easy to detect an excess of these substances.
