Tomb Raider Animated Series Project Coming Exclusively to Netflix

Netflix, Crystal Dynamics, Square Enix, and Legendary Television are teaming up for a brand new animated series based on the Tomb Raider video game franchise. While details are limited at the moment, here’s everything we do know so far. First announced alongside an anime project for Skull Island back in January 2021, Tomb Raider is a brand new animated series project coming exclusively to Netflix.

Three movies have been released so far based on the video game IP including the two Angelina Jolie entries including Lara Croft: Tomb Raider and The Cradle of Life. A reboot starring Alicia Vikander came in 2018 with a sequel in development to be released by Warner Brothers. The new series will pick up shortly after the events of the Square Enix trilogy of games that were released between 2013 and 2018.

They operate out of Austin in Texas. Serving as executive producers are Howard K. Bliss, Stephan Vladimir Bugaj, Dmitri M. Johnson, and Jacob Robinson. Writing concluded on the project in late May 2021 with Tasha Huo posting that they’ve concluded the writing process meaning it’s now all down to the animators and voice artists to bring the words on paper to life.

Who Is The Executive Producer Of The Tomb Raider Anime?

Audio player loading… Despite its setup as a kind of origin story, 2013’s Tomb Raider reboot (and its sequels) take on Lara Croft feels a universe away from the Eidos originals. But Netflix this week announced that its upcoming Tomb Raider anime hopes to bridge the gap by bringing these two different iterations of Ms Croft together in one unified timeline. In a short series update, executive producer Tasha Huo explains that Netflix and the team at Crystal Dynamics are hard at work unifying the timelines for the animated series.

As part of that attempt, Huo revealed two characters making their way to the anime. Earl Baylon, who plays Jonah Maiava in the Survivor Trilogy (referring to Crystal Dynamics’ reboot series) will be reprising his role for the show, while actor Allen Maldonado will be playing Zip, a character who appears in older Tomb Raider games like Chronicles and Underworld. It’ll be interesting to see how this attempt at unification plays out.

Crystal Dynamics’ 2013 revival was a pointed rejection of that character, painting Lara as a grittier, more grounded woman who stumbled into death-defying spelunking completely unprepared. The Tomb Raider anime doesn’t currently have a release date. But with an adaptation track record including the perfectly serviceable Dota anime to the properly great Castlevania series, there’s every chance Netflix could pull off a fresh take on Lara Croft.

What Streaming Service Is Bringing A Tomb Raider Anime To Netflix?

A Tomb Raider anime is on its way to Netflix, the streaming giant announced on Wednesday. According to Netflix’s press release, the anime will be a sequel to the most recent reboot video game trilogy of the Tomb Raider franchise. As you might expect, the series will follow the game’s iconic main character, Lara Croft, as she travels the world searching out new, more exciting, and more dangerous adventures.

Lara Croft’s last trip outside of video games came in 2018 when Alicia Vikander brought the character to the big screen in a reboot directed by Roar Uthaug. This news comes hot on the heels of the wildly popular new trailer for Godzilla vs. Kong. The series will follow a few characters who end up shipwrecked on Kong’s island as they try to survive the other prehistoric horrors that live there.

Tomb Raider is an upcoming anime series being produced by Legendary and published by Netflix[1]. Season Two [ ] To be added. [4] On May 28th, 2021, showrunner Tasha Huo announced on Twitter, that the writing of the series has ended.

[6] On September 1st, 2021, Variety reported that the series was sold to Netflix with a two-season order, meaning that a second season was guaranteed, and likely produced at the same time as the first. [2] On October 28th, 2021, along with the announcement that Jonah Maiava and Zip would be appearing in the anime series for the 25th Anniversary celebrations, Tasha Huo stated that the anime was part of the unification of the Survivor Timeline, Legend Timeline and Original Timeline, which Crystal Dynamics announced for the next steps of the franchise in early 2021. She also stated that the series would explore Lara’s life in ways we never get to in the games, but always wondered about.

They also stated that the series would follow Lara Croft on a road trip, traveling the world and protecting people. [13] What’s On Netflix later corroborated the appearance of Zip on September 13, 2021. [14] Allen Maldonado was announced in the role of Zip on October 28, 2021. tweeted on August 10, 2021 that they had seen casting information that suggested Zip would return in the anime as a reoccurring character.
