Jack the Ripper was a serial killer who butchered a number of women in and around the Whitechapel District of London in 1888. This drama begins about six months after the final murder, with now-peaceful East London hoping that the reign of terror is over. Among the hopeful are members of H Division, the police precinct tasked with keeping order in the district, including Detective Inspector Edmund Reid, a forward-thinking detective haunted by a past mistake that ended in tragedy.

Where Is Ripper Street Set?
Ripper Street is a BBC TV series set in Whitechapel in London’s East End in 1889, six months after the infamous Jack the Ripper murders. The series stars Matthew Macfadyen, Jerome Flynn and Adam Rothenberg. It was confirmed on 29 January 2013 that Ripper Street will return for a second 8-part series to be aired in early 2014.
So we’ll touch on Ripper in that way but not dig anybody up or change the canonical five… All the period depictions I’d seen of that particular crime story had almost been a bit too well behaved in a slightly slower way and shots have to be a bit wider to show off the nice furniture, but if you can think of something awful, it was happening [in Victorian London]. The men of H Division had hunted the Ripper and failed to find him.
Among the factories, rookeries, chop shops, brothels and pubs, Detective Inspector Edmund Reid and Detective Sergeant Bennet Drake team with US Army surgeon and former Pinkerton agent Captain Homer Jackson to investigate the killings. They frequently cross paths with Tenter Street brothel madam Long Susan, who came to London with Jackson from America and lets him reside at the brothel. Their relationship becomes strained due to Jackson’s attraction to one of her most profitable girls, Rose Erskine, and because of his close involvement with H Division and Reid.
Lurk – Place of concealment. Molly house – homosexual, specifically transvestite, brothel. Pig – Policeman, usually a detective.
Who Plays Inspector Edmund Reid?
A ridiculously underrated Victorian crime thriller with writing so deft and nimble it takes your breath away. Matthew Macfadyen is Inspector Edmund Reid, the still, central maypole around which the inhabitants of late-19th-century east London caper, occasionally stepping out of the fray to slaughter one another. He works H Division, the most feared patch in London, aided by Captain Homer Jackson (Adam Rothenberg) and Sergeant Bennet Drake (Jerome Flynn) and is often thwarted by former madam, “Long” Susan Hart (MyAnna Buring).
Warlow and his fellow writers have adopted a house style that combines antiquity with immediacy, finding that sweet spot between period escapism and visceral nowness. It’s like a magic trick. That care for words is the foundation of Ripper Street, the integrity on to which the writers layer ever more gothic plots, flights of fancy that other shows couldn’t get away with.
This final, quite remarkable series breaks free of the crime-of-the-week format and focuses entirely on Reid and co as they push towards their finish line. Because when your series is so nearly culled before its time, you have every right to take your revolver in hand when the time is right and see your characters off with commensurate dignity. So Reid, the Whitechapel gamekeeper, is now hunted along with Jackson and Hart, for their mounting tally of crimes.
All too soon you reach the final episode, which gives Ripper Street the most shattering, emotionally raw ending imaginable. If you liked Ripper Street, watch: Ripper Street seasons 1 – 4 (Amazon Prime).
