Creators Ashley Lyle and Bart Nickerson, along with director Karyn Kusama, do that in the very first episode of Yellowjackets better than we’ve seen in a long, long time. The pilot runs viewers through a gamut of emotions at an athletic pace, using dual timelines to introduce the young women of the Yellowjackets, an undefeated high-school soccer team on its way to nationals in 1996, and also show how their lives look 25 years after surviving a plane crash en route to that very game.

This next bit will quite possibly only be exciting to me, but she directed one solitary episode of The L Word during the original series’ fourth season. So yeah, with all that in mind, she is the perfect person to introduce us to what I, and many others, passionately claim to be the best new show of 2021. Something terrible happened to the Yellowjackets, and we spend the bulk of the episode being expertly handed glimpses of what that something could be.

We see them gathering at a party in the woods to blow off steam and exchange emotional anxieties over flying to nationals the next day. And we see them board a private plane paid for by the father of one of the girls, Lottie (Courtney Eaton), which promptly plummets from the sky into the thick woods beneath them, leaving them to fend for themselves for what we come to learn was 19 months. And beyond that, which is a lot in and of itself, we get snippets showing us that whatever happened to those girls during those 19 months was bad enough to bleed into their new reality post-rescue, leaving them upright but not altogether right.

This serves to keep us from knowing who’s doing what, aside from glimpses of telltale pink Converse, specific T-shirts, and huge glasses. We see a lot of what 2021 is like for a post-crash Yellowjacket through the eyes of Shauna, portrayed as an adult by Melanie Lynskey and in flashbacks by Sophie Nélisse. Self-isolating in suburban New Jersey as the begrudging matriarch of a family of three, she spends her days grumbling over rabbits tearing up her garden and stain-sticking skid marks out of her husband Jeff’s boxers.

Jessica is fishing for info on what happened during their time in the wilderness and says she can probably get her a seven-figure book advance for a tell-all about it, but Shauna shoots her down, delivering an icy-cold “You smug little bitch” monologue that would turn anyone’s knees to jelly, let alone a nosey “reporter” who is way out of her league with all this. They seem otherwise occupied and not likely to be easily persuaded to do anything by anyone, regardless of the bribe offered. Like Natalie says in her last group session before leaving rehab, you gotta find a way to keep the tiger in the cage.

Yellowjackets No Compass Season 1 Episode 7 Editor’s Rating 5 stars * * * * * « Previous Next » Photo: Kailey Schwerman/SHOWTIME Believing that this show is about a group of teens resulting to cannibalism to survive being stranded in the wilderness after a plane crash is wild enough, but this show is so much wilder than even that. But as I’m playing Citizen Detective, spending countless hours thinking about the mysteries of Yellowjackets which is, hands down, my favorite show of the past untold number of years, I have to remind myself that the fun comes primarily in the wondering. There are mysteries we’ve been presented that I hope won’t get solved easily.

Taissa, Natalie, and Shauna are getting closer to finding out who has been blackmailing them, and they use a tracking device purchased on Amazon to help them out. A tickle in my brain tells me we’re going to end up seeing this glitter on something that Jeff is wearing down the line. This episode jumps back and forth between timelines, even more so than the previous episodes, as the Yellowjackets’ past and present collide.

None of the Yellowjackets are trying to raise hell just yet, aside from maybe Misty and Lottie, but you can see it coming. After Lottie gives Van her weird bone, she tells her that she had a dream about red smoke and a river of blood. The new group comes across both of these things down the line when they encounter a red-tinted stream, and then, later, Taissa uses a flare gun to scare off a wolf that was chomping on Van’s face, clouding them all in a plume of red smoke.

I love not knowing where a show is headed, and this all has me pretty deep in the weeds, which is beyond exciting. Jackie later sneaks into Shauna’s journal, which was hidden up in the rafters, and based on her sobbing, we can tell that she now knows who the real father is. Javi seems to also be after Shauna’s journal, but when she catches him going through her bag, he says he was looking for the hunting knife to work on a project.

The one to really keep an eye on here is Lottie, though. • Am I the only one who thinks Shauna and Jackie have major gay energy for each other? • If Adam is in fact Javi, what if Adam was the one who killed Travis (his brother) and cleared out his bank account? Hopefully, Misty comes up with something better than fentanyl-filled chocolates to get her to tell what she knows, if she knows anything at all.

Five episodes into Yellowjackets‘ freshman run, the survival drama has been renewed for a second season by Showtime. The series hails from creators/executive producers/co-showrunners Ashley Lyle and Bart Nickerson, exec producer/co-showrunner Jonathan Lisco, eOne and Drew Comins’ studio-based Creative Engine. “It’s done extremely well in terms of streaming subscriptions,” Levine told Deadline. “It was our second biggest series debut ever on streaming, and it’s grown each week on streaming by double digit percentages. For it to be embraced as quickly and as deeply as it was by both audiences and critics alike, that’s a little like catching lightning in a bottle — you can never anticipate that but boy, it’s awfully sweet when it rarely happens.”

Still, “I do know that there will be some surprises in terms of the characters,” Levine said. There will be some real surprises in terms of that and I think some characters you may not even have met yet.” Levine, who recalled how the Yellowjackets pitch struck a chord with him and his team to a point where he couldn’t remember whether the story was fictional or based on real events.
