School For Good And Evil’ Is A Kids’ Fantasy Series For The Fake News Era toggle caption © 2017 by Iacopo Bruno/Harper Collins The School for Good and Evil isn’t just a fantasy novel series for middle-grade readers. There’s a YouTube channel, an interactive website with t-shirt giveaways and character contests, Instagrams, dramatic book trailers. Universal Pictures bought the rights to the series pretty much as soon as the first book was published.
Perhaps it’s not surprising, then, that the man behind The School for Good and Evil empire, Soman Chainani, grew up idealizing Madonna not for her music, but for her business sense. Chainani is a dashing young guy, whose Crossfit skills you can follow on Twitter, along with excerpts of the new book. Growing up in Miami in the 1980s, when he wasn’t idealizing Madonna-as-entrepreneur, he was binging on animated movies.
He says that reading the original, much darker, much more complicated stories the Disney movies were based on made him feel like he’d been cheated. That’s where I think ‘The School for Good and Evil’ came from, he says. It was this desire to reclaim fairy tales and give kids an alternative to Disney set in a similar fairy tale world that looked like Disney but ultimately break it all down.
The School for Good and Evil is where good kids learn to be fairy tale heroes and bad kids learn to be villains and murderers and monsters. These are kids who are going to be able to look at the past fairy tales and then live out their own. The pen has a will of its own and drafts the official version of new fairy tales as they unfold in a grand blank storybook.
Reading these books, it’s hard not to think about Harry Potter. Because it just had such a strong kind of moral spine to it, he says. Your reward for making it to the end is a crazy plot twist.
Where Is The Story Set?
The story is set in the village of Gavaldon, where two children disappear every four years, never to return. The children of the village have realized that those that disappear eventually turn up in the fairy tales sold at the local book store, each child appearing as either a ‘Hero’ or a ‘Villain’. Sophie hopes to be carried off the the legendary ‘school for good’, where she can become a princess, however Agatha wants nothing to do with the ‘school for evil’.
In the course of lessons and events where the two schools mix, Sophie and Agatha fall apart, but Sophie begins to fall in love with one of the Princes of the school of good, Tedros. The two girls break into the school master’s tower in an attempt to get back home and are given a riddle. Agatha believes that the answer to the riddle is love and tries to help Sophie and Tedros fall in love by convincing him that Sophie was put in the wrong school.
As evil begins to fill her, she has dreams that reveal that Agatha is the enemy she is destined to fight in her fairy tale. Sophie decides to break into the school masters tower again in order to steal his Storian, a magical item he uses to write the fairy tale. He tells her that he is in love with her and she attempts to kiss him, only to realize that as a villain she is incapable of true love, causing the school master to begins to rot.
The school masters brother appears to defeat him but he cannot save Sophie. Agatha kisses Sophie to say good bye, yet because she had a pure, heroic love for Sophie, she brings her back to life.

What Is The Only Mechanism Of Survival In A Fairytale?
This post was contributed by a community member. The views expressed here are the author’s own. Reply Imagine a world where the only mechanism of survival is through a fairytale and that having the persona of good or evil is predestined.
In the case of Agatha, who prefers the color black to wear all the time, lives near a graveyard and for the most part hates everyone, she may as well been accepted to the School for Evil the minute she was born. But then the peculiar thing happens when both girls arrive at the schools; they wind up switched up and much to their evident disgusts. Growing up without cable or Internet, Chainani religiously watched the Disney adaptations of classic fairytales.
Hence the development of The School for Good and Evil, for Chainani was drawn to the subject matter of the definitions of good and evil; in regards to what they really are and what they are otherwise perceived as. Another example can be a murder that takes place at one point in the book. It isn’t as heavily addressed at all within the time following it.
There wasn’t as much development between the two and by the time the book has reached its climax, their relationship instantly shifted from one state of being to another. Even though Tedros was more of a secondary character as opposed to Agatha and Sophie, Chainani could have polished that aspect of the story a little more.
Where Is Agatha Deposited?
Agatha is deposited at the School for Good, while Sophie is sent to the School for Evil. Agatha, feeling out of place at the School for Good, only wants to get Sophie and break out so they can go home. Then Sophie’s flirting with Tedros begins to convince him she may be good after all, and he vows to help her prove her goodness.
One was good; the other was evil. The evil brother tried to seize the Storian so he could be in control. A great war began, and one brother was killed.
The girls determine that the answer to their riddle is Love. Agatha is convinced that if Sophie’s true love, Tedros, kisses Sophie, it will prove she isn’t a villain. Only Sophie learns that the students at the School for Good (who are called Evers) are having a ball.
Several of the Nevers, who are convinced Sophie has been cheating on her exams and homework, plan to kill her in an upcoming challenge. Soon, she and Tedros plan to attend the ball together. She tries unsuccessfully to destroy the student body as well.
When the Evers arrive to attack, Sophie tries to discredit Agatha and convince the Evers that Agatha is on Evil’s side. Sophie realizes the only way she will ever get the ending she wants is to destroy the School Master and the Storian. He believes that with Sophie, he can find something even more powerful: Evil love.
Who Wrote The School For Good And Evil?
The School for Good and Evil by Soman Chainani Scattered Book Summary The children of Gavaldon spend their whole childhoods hearing the legends of the School Master kidnapping children and taking them to either the School for Good or the School for Evil. For children like Sophie, the School for Good has always been a dream. Her pink dresses, perfect appearances, and love for good deeds makes her a shoe in to get taken.
At first, it seems like an awful mistake, but as events unfold it is questioned if the School Master actually made a mistake after all… Introduction to the book’s characters: Sophie: At first, Sophie thinks she is very generous and caring. However, it is known that she is very vain and selfish, caring more about her looks and appearances above everything. When dropped into the School for Evil she was confused and angry, consistently lashing out.
Summer Reading Questions to Consider: How do Agatha and Sophie show that first impressions aren’t always correct? Do you believe that a soul can be purely good or purely evil? Are Agatha’s and Sophie’s motivations to get Tedros back different?

Martin, author of the bestselling Babysitter’s Club series) “Chainani has imagined the world where fairy tales come to life, where for every fairy princess with a ‘Happily Ever After’ in her future there is a villain with a tragic fate in store. Young readers won’t be able to stop turning the pages till they reach the surprising and satisfying conclusion.”

What Is The Only Mechanism Of Survival In A Fairytale?

Summer Reading Questions to Consider: How do Agatha and Sophie show that first impressions aren’t always correct? Do you believe that a soul can be purely good or purely evil? Are Agatha’s and Sophie’s motivations to get Tedros back different?
