Loosely based on Mary Queen of Scotts’ life, Reign brings viewers into French, Scottish, and English courts to reveal all that takes place behind those castle’s walls. Although it is a great series, I do not recommend it for teens under the age of 15. The show contains lots of violence, sex, swearing, and other things.
Killing people to get away with things also happens, at times, in the show. Multiple main characters go insane from various things, which causes them to be violent. Sexual violence is also present in the show, including a rape scene (it is very hard to watch).
Bare back is shown, but no nudity. Taking a mistress is talked about in the show, and multiple characters have a mistress (at different points in the show). Lots of other sexual situations take place, as well.
All in all, this show is very good! Although not completely historically accurate, it is definitely worth the watch!
Which Season Of The Cw’S Reign Is In Its Third Season?
The CW’s Reign has never been the highest ratings-bringer on the network. However, now in its third season, Reign is continuing to post new lows. In its tough Friday timeslot this week, the drama only did a .2 rating in the 18-49 demographic, and only a paltry 923,000 total viewers tuned in.
If you’ve ever paid attention to The CW’s ratings, the network doesn’t require its shows to pull in numbers that are quite as high as the big networks—NBC, ABC, etc.—in order to survive. Last week, The Flash, for instance, only pulled in around three and a half million viewers and a 1.4 rating, and those numbers are enough to put the drama in the highest ratings bracket over at The CW. In fact, TV Line is reporting the numbers are the lowest the drama has ever brought in.
I also wouldn’t be surprised if the show was treated similar to Beauty and the Beast and shipped off to summertime to finish out its run. If you don’t know what Reign is at this point, the period drama was a breath of fresh air when it first aired, mixing historical characters and accuracies with hip period costumes and a young, fresh soundtrack. However, if you want a YA take on Mary, Queen of Scots or are interested in fashion, it’s been a pretty appealing, albeit soapy show.
Reign isn’t the only network TV show that has the potential to get cancelled this season. The CW’s Reign currently airs on Friday nights at 8 p.m. EST.
What Is The Name Of The Period Drama Television Series Following The Early Years Of Mary, Queen Of Scots, In 1557 France?
Ok, now that I’ve gotten that outta my system I can thoroughly enjoy CW’s Reign for what it is: totally historically inaccurate, almost insufferable, laughable acting, punchable actors and glorious, glorious, well manicured, fluff. What’s Reign About: “Reign is a period drama television series following the early years of Mary, Queen of Scots, in 1557 France.” That little blurb is courtesy of Wikipedia The CW’s version is, typically longer: “Hidden between the lines of the history books is the story of Mary Stuart, the young woman the world would come to know as Mary, Queen of Scots.
Further complicating things is Bash, Francis’ handsome, roguish half-brother, who has a history of his own ─ despite his illegitimate birth, Bash is his father’s favorite. Essentially, a good CW love triangle is forming, guys. He’s the King’s bastard who duh, likes Mary just the way she is even though she’s supposed to marry Francis. Fingers crossed it’s Melissa Joan Hart under there when they unveil her on the mid-season finale. Bitch has a mortgage. You could die from wearing one of these non-period specific dresses!

What Is One Thing That History Buffs Should Stay Away From?
Considering how low those expectations were, that’s really something. I poked around online for reviews, and it seems most of them are positive, with the warning that “history buffs should stay away.” You don’t say!
I am a bit of a history buff myself. I know, I know, how Hermione of me. I also believe that history buffs who complain about every minor detail in a costume drama are only doing it because they can, not because they actually expect historical accuracy.
However, there’s still a limit to just how fast and loose a show can play with historical accuracy and still expect audiences to suspend their disbelief. Sometimes, anachronism can be an affective narrative or stylistic device—see Sophia Coppola’s Marie Antoinette or most of Baz Luhrmann’s ouevre—but that is clearly not the case here. Surely you jest!
They giggle over first kisses and sex talk with the frankness of contemporary American teens who’ve watched one too many episodes of Sex and the City. Look, TV writers. I don’t know why all y’all labor under this belief that love triangles are viewer catnip and we just can’t get enough even when it’s painfully obvious which couple is endgame (particularly since the writers told us Mary would indeed marry Francis, as she did in history).
The friend and Mary clash because apparently sis code comes second to, you know, trying to rule one’s country (Portuguese prince promised Mary military aid if she were to marry him). Said friend ends up hooking up with a kitchen servant that she flirts with throughout the episode, anyway, while Francis advises Mary to go to Portuguese prince with the same manner of angst one would employ when turning down a prom date. In terms of personality and character development, Mary’s friends are basically interchangeable—I had to look up the cast on imdb to get their names straight.
It’s not so bad it’s good.
