The network was renamed Nickelodeon IN 1979 as an ode to five cent movie theaters, which were popular in the US in the early 1900s.

But Netflix and Nickelodeon have decided to make your life a whole lot easier — and more entertaining. And then there are some new spin-offs in the works as a result of this beautiful partnership: Squidward, the infamous squid from SpongeBob SquarePants’ Bikini Bottom, will be getting his own show. It seems Squidward’s immeasurable talent hasn’t gone unrecognized, after all. Neither Netflix nor Nickelodeon can say for sure, but hopefully it’s soon.

Nickelodeon has released some of the best characters and story lines over the years, and Netflix will only improve their roster. Move over, Disney+, because every 80’s and 90’s kid’s favorite television network is back. Netflix Has Entered A Multi-Year Deal With Nickelodeon To Bring Numerous Animated Films And Tv Shows To What Service?

Audio player loading… In what seems like an effort to combat the threat of Disney Plus, Netflix has entered into a multi-year deal with the kids entertainment giants at Nickelodeon which will bring numerous original animated films and TV shows to the streaming service. The deal acts as an expansion of Netflix and Nickelodeon’s existing partnership, which has so far produced such animated TV specials as Rocko’s Modern Life: Static Cling (pictured) and Invader Zim: Enter the Florpus. The pair also have two more specials in Loud House and Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles on the horizon.

Citing anonymous sources, New York Times has reported that one of these projects will be a music-based SpongeBob Squarepants spin-off focusing on the character of Squidward. The deal, which NYT’s sources estimate is worth $200 million, seems like a clear response to this week’s arrival of the family-friendly Disney Plus streaming service, which has already amassed 10 million subscribers after just 24 hours. Of course, it will take a far larger number of subscribers than that to faze Netflix – according to Statista, the US streaming giant currently has 158.3 million paying subscribers as of October 2019.

Just a day after CBS chief Joe Ianniello noted the addition of children’s programming to CBS All Access, Viacom has exercised a different strategic option, setting a multi-year licensing deal for Nickelodeon kids fare with Netflix. Forthcoming specials under the agreement will be based on The Loud House and Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. The deal builds on a relationship that has brought animated specials Rocko’s Modern Life: Static Cling and Invader Zim: Enter the Florpus to Netflix.

Netflix also had a pact with Nickelodeon a decade ago, but then called it off after seeing linear ratings decline. With the Viacom-CBS merger just weeks away from closing, debate continues across the industry about owning the direct-to-consumer relationship versus profiting via licensing. In that context, and with many high-profile streaming launches spotlighting that issue, the Nick-Netflix deal is sure to gain attention.

He said the company will “broaden our reach” in the fourth quarter by adding children’s programming to all access, later predicting it would help reduce churn. Ianniello also gave a shoutout to Viacom’s ad-supported Pluto streaming platform, saying CBS planned new AVOD ventures on Pluto. Few long-term streaming plans have been revealed for after Viacom and CBS finally reunite, but the two bring a formidable mix of both subscription and ad-supported streaming assets.
