What Ya Skating Drama Has Netflix Cancelled After One Series?
EXCLUSIVE: Netflix has cancelled YA skating drama Zero Chill after one series. The 10-parter from All3Media-owned Lime Pictures, which has also produced three series of Netflix YA drama Free Rein and is behind upcoming Netflix non-scripted format Dance Monsters, dropped on the platform in March 2021, having been filmed in Sheffield, UK. A Lime spokeswoman said: “There are currently no plans for a second series of Zero Chill.
Sheffield was a wonderful place to film in and we hope to return to the city with future projects.” The series followed 15-year-old figure skater Kayla, whose life was up-ended from Canada to the UK when her twin brother received a place at a legendary hockey academy. Distraught at her parents’ decision to put her brother’s ambitions before her own, Kayla found her place on the ice again in the shadow of her superstar brother.
The outfit also produced two series of Disney Channel’s Evermoor Chronicles from 2014-2017 and is also behind Channel 4 soap Hollyoaks and ITV reality series The Only Way is Essex. Zero Chill featured an ensemble cast including Grace Beedle as lead Kayla MacBentley, Dakota Benjamin Taylor as her brother “Mac” MacBentley and Sarah-Jane Potts and Doug Rao as their parents Jenny and Luke. The show was created by Doc Martin and Free Rein writers Kirstie Falkous and John Regier and the writers’ room was overseen by Ackley Bridge writer Adam Usden.
Netflix has previously countered accusations that it disproportionately cancels more shows than other networks and platforms, revealing data last year that it said showed an industry-standard level of cancellations.
Who Is Kayla Macbentley’S Twin Brother?
So sit back and suspend all logic and disbelief and watch some interesting family drama… on ice! ZERO CHILL: STREAM IT OR SKIP IT? The Gist: Kayla MacBentley (Grace Beedie) is a talented 15-year-old figure skater, but has been out of sorts since her family moved from Canada to England, so her twin brother Mac (Dakota Taylor) can hone his talents at a prestigious hockey academy run by Anton Hammarström (Oscar Skagerberg), a former NHL superstar and teammate of their father Luke (Doug Rao).
But she is still frustrated and resentful that her father and mother Jenny (Sarah-Jane Potts) tore her out of her comfort zone in order to move for Mac’s hockey career. For his part, Mac his having a little discomfort fitting into the flow of the team. Her fit of pique is alleviated a little bit when she meets and becomes fast friends with Sky Tyler (Jade Ma) who works at the rink’s cafe, which is owned by her mother Holly (Christina Tam).
What Shows Will It Remind You Of? Party Of Five on skates? Our Take: One of the things that made us scratch our heads about Zero Chill, created by Kirstie Falkous and John Regier, is that the MacBentley’s moved away from Canada, the hockey capital of the world, to England, a country that has little to no hockey heritage, in order for Mac to further his hockey career?
Once you get past the strange setup, though, Zero Chill is a pretty harmless family show. Do the MacBentley twins show a bit of a privileged personality? Absolutely.
Parting Shot: After skating with the mystery skater, Kayla asks the skater to take off his/her mask. The skater is about to when Anton (called to the arena by Kayla’s snitching brother) calls out to her. They don’t get a ton of time in the first episode, but it seems that they both resent how the talented Ava isn’t getting a second look from her father, despite her figure skating ability.
What Is The Name Of The Company That Produces Zero Chill?
Netflix has incredibly poor luck with its ice-skating dramas, as for the second time within a few short years, we see another Original canceled. Fans of Zero Chill will be disappointed to learn that the series will not be returning for a second season at Netflix. The series is produced by Lime Pictures, the studio behind Netflix’s Free Reign and Disney’s The Evermoor Chronicles.
It must be noted that Zero Chill did perform well with younger audiences, and the series was able to make it into the top ten lists of 49 different countries on Netflix, including the USA, where it stayed for five days. However, Zero Chill’s performance wasn’t enough for Netflix to warrant a second season. Which cast members would return for season 2?
Paired figure skating typically doesn’t include two female partners, so if Kayla and Sky find a way to compete you can expect their competitors to frown upon the duo. As for Mac, the Hockey ace turned down the opportunity to go abroad to Prague and place for a professional team. Instead, he has decided to stay with his family in the UK in support of his twin sister Kayla.
