It’s surprising to see Great Pretender explore such mature subject matter and highlight a dark corner of the criminal underworld that’s often ignored. It unfortunately feels prescient in a way that the previous cases haven’t and it works as a powerful catalyst for all of the characters involved. Human trafficking also brings Edamame’s story full circle in a strange way since he’s previously teased that his father’s arrest involved human trafficking suspicions.
Great Pretender has filled Edamame’s backstory with endearing quirks and painful confrontations, but these new episodes really put him through the gauntlet and he matures in some significant way. Edamame has to really examine if Laurent and company are a positive influence or if they’re making him sink deeper into a dark life that he won’t be able to escape. Laurent also gets expanded on in some very enlightening ways that help illustrate how he’s become so disaffected in life.
This grift culminates in such an extravagant way that it makes The Sting or Matchstick Men seem lazy in comparison. A less carefully planned version of this would come across as cheap, but every moment here is earned and a testament to the tightly plotted nature of these episodes. “Wizard of Far East” also plays even better on second viewing since you get to be in on these schemes and know where they’re headed.
This story knows how to subvert expectations and pull off major surprises that are satisfying both in terms of narrative and on an emotional level. Great Pretender is obviously much less driven by sprawling action scenes, but the animation here stands out with how it breaks the rules of color palettes and conventional character models.

What Makes Great Pretender Fascinating?
That’s what makes it fascinating – to see something complex open up gracefully, layer-by-layer, until you’re left with something very new and surprising. When Great Pretender first came out way back when, I was thoroughly impressed, not just by the shockingly smart cons and by the animation, but also by the emotional depth that the series presented. These bunch of misfits fit with each other perfectly and the way the series explored that was refreshing.
However, last season the stakes were not as high as this, and thus I am quite content with the change of pacing. However, this is not to say that Great Pretender season 2 is slow. It’s fun and extremely energetic, and the way Laurent and Edamame go through with their million deceptions is something that we have come to expect.
As I was previously saying, Great Pretender season 2 is a deeper exploration of Edamame’s grief and his maturing. This was something that was much needed to give context to season 1, along with Laurent’s backstory. The series brilliantly meshes these two very difficult things together to give us a series which is not only extremely fulfilling but also thought-provoking.
There’s a kaleidoscope of colours everywhere and the stylisation of the characters add depth and meaning to their personalities. Summing up: Great Pretender season 2 Great Pretender season 2, much like its predecessor, does not disappoint in the slightest. The cons are fun, smart and never do they feel boring.
Although yes, I did like the previous format more (three different stories), it is to be kept in mind here that this season has more at stake. Are there bigger things at stake? Great Pretender season 2 is streaming on Netflix.
What Is The Name Of Edamame’S Father?
Review of season 1 – click here With all of the set up out of the way from the first season and a nifty little recap before the new episodes begin, the ‘confidence men’ take us (the viewer) on a 9 episode roller-coaster while setting up one last con, only to be duped once again by the finale. Edamame (Makoto Edamura) comes into his own as a full-fledged ‘confidence man’ while joining Laurent in his longest con/revenge mission ever. His mission this season consumes the entire season as he goes after the Japanese and Chinese Mafia for their part in killing his love, Dorothy.
In actuality, he went to prison as a part of the long con. When Edamame encounters his father (Seiji Ozaki), who is now apart of the Chinese Mafia as a translator. Review of season 1 – click here Without spoiling any more of the episodic drama, I will confirm that while Great Pretender season one was fantastic, Season 2: The Wizard of Far East is full of drama, action, loopholes, and cons inside of cons.
At any given moment, you may lose track of who the “good guys” are while you’re watching. Plus, there is a moment where Edamame pushes Laurent to the limit with his comments regarding Dorothy, which is the most emotional moment in the season. Abigail and Cynthia aren’t as involved this season, they are more so pieces of a chest game and are more so supporting Laurent in these 9 episodes.
