GOOD SAM stars Sophia Bush and Jason Isaacs in a drama about Dr. Sam Griffith, a gifted heart surgeon who excels in her new leadership role as chief of surgery after her renowned boss falls into a coma. When her former boss wakes up months later demanding to resume his duties, Sam is tasked with supervising this egotistical expert with a scalpel who never acknowledged her stellar talent. Complicating matters, the caustic and arrogant Dr. Rob “Griff” Griffith also happens to be her father.
Who Is The Creator Of Cbs’S New Procedural House With A Daughter?
You have a beloved brand with an easily reproducible formula that has only built an audience in syndication/streaming. After all, you couldn’t have House without Hugh Laurie. Airdate: 10 p.m.
Sam and Griff butt heads about everything, including details of their family relationship, but the hierarchy is clear — Sam is in charge of the residents, but Griff is in charge of everything. Then, in a strangely contrived piece of writing, a shooting in the ER leaves Griff in a coma and when he emerges six months later, Sam has been put in charge of the department. Griff was not designed to follow orders, much less orders from his daughter.
Spoiler: It’s never lupus, except for maybe the one time it is. But this time it isn’t. Maybe the case in the second episode ended up being lupus.
It’s no wonder that Griff doesn’t respect Sam, who represents all manner of new-fangled ideas, including replacing Griff’s whiteboard with snazzy tablets, attempting to integrate departments in the hospital and not directly insulting her subordinates. They would have no personalities at all, except that in an effort to establish their respective values in the pilot, Sam goes around telling each of them why they’re great. And if you’re thinking this hospital needs to refine its rules on nepotism and fraternization, you don’t know the half of it.
The episode begins with a weirdly comic car chase that completely undermines a key piece of trauma in Sam and Griff’s past, while the music exhibits a marked shift to “hilarious hijinks” wackiness. The pilot has simmering, but believable, hostilities. Both Wech and pilot director Tamra Davis have experience in genre-splitting television, but this plays as less an effort to straddle a difficult line — War of the Roses meets ER actually sounds like a decent idea — and more a result of questionable development notes.
I’m as game as the next fan for a new House.
Who Is The Heart Surgeon In Good Sam?
Network medical procedurals are all pretty much the same: Unusual cases, doctors who are conflicted but ultimately make the right choices, romances between people in the white lab coats. In Good Sam (short for “Good Samaritan” and a play on the main character’s first name), the added story detail is that a talented surgeon becomes her father’s boss when he comes back to work after a six-month coma. That should work out well, right?
The Gist: As heart surgeon Dr. Sam Griffith (Sophia Bush) chases down the patient, she reassures him that the absolute best heart surgeon in the country is going to work on him. We see Dr. Rob “Griff” Griffith (Jason Isaacs) park his Mustang in his spot; as he, Sam and their team of residents prep for the surgery, Griff points out the biggest flaws of each resident — Sam’s best friend, Dr. Lex Trulie (Skye P. Marshall), Dr. Caleb Tucker (Michael Stahl-David), Dr. Isan Shah (Omar Maskati) and Dr. Joey Costa (Davi Santos) — then criticizes Sam for her lack of leadership. During an ER triage, Griff gets shot, and when Sam calls out “Dad!”, we learn that her prickly boss is also her father.
And the first thing he thinks of is going back to work. What Shows Will It Remind You Of? Given its stretch of a premise and the fact that it’s a CBS procedural, the potential was there for a show full of one-dimensional characters and cliched lines.
He’s an arrogant ass, she gets tired of being undermined by him, then repeat. But what surprised us through the first two episodes is that their relationship actually gets worse instead of better, after Sam finds out that Griff has gone behind her back to get him reinstated as department head. We get light moments to help balance some of the heaviness, but it there are long stretches of time where the show has absolutely no sense of humor.
Parting Shot: Sam decides to continue proctoring Griff, “But as your daughter; I’m calling it,” she says. Most Pilot-y Line: There’s some business about how Griff and Sam’s relationship changed after an auto accident led to open heart surgery for Sam when she was young, but that feels like the details are being frustratingly held back. Who Is Dr. Sam Griffith?
[Warning: The below contains MAJOR spoilers for the Good Sam series premiere.] When we meet Dr. Sam Griffith (Sophia Bush), she’s convincing a patient that he’s in good hands with Dr. She had heart surgery a long time ago. She can’t work with Griff if he won’t respect her.
I’ve changed,” she explains to her mother. I have the authority now, and he will have to respect that.” But it doesn’t take long for Griff to try to take charge once again, ordering tests when he thinks he’s diagnosed their patient.
That’s when Sam calls him out on not respecting her authority or rules, and he boasts, “You need me.” But as she sees it, “It’s actually the other way around.” “Something in him is broken,” Vivian says when Sam turns to her, and she thinks it has been since the accident.
I’ve always been like this,” Griff says. Rather than put down her team, Sam tells them what she sees in them: “inspiring confidence” (Caleb), “wisdom and compassion” (Isan), “commitment, courage and a complexion I truly envy” (Jason), and, after a pause, “a brilliant doctor who I need on this team” (Lex). And Sam echoes her father’s earlier words — “good thing he’s in the hands of a capable surgeon” — when she has to improvise in the OR, using both the donor heart (which is too small) and the patient’s own to save him, with Griff’s guidance.
But, “as your daughter, I’m calling it.” As for Sam’s personal life, Caleb seems to be regretting the breakup, but will he get a second chance? Then, Sam tells him she started playing piano to make her fingers more agile and it became her stress release, and the two stress that they didn’t get their jobs because of who their fathers are.
But for how long can Sam and Griff’s relationship be so contentious? And since it doesn’t seem like Griff is going to change anytime soon, will Sam be the one who has to give in? What did you think of Good Sam?
