Ginny & Georgia is Not Gilmore Girls, But Fans Will Be Hooked

Ginny & Georgia is not quite this generation’s Gilmore Girls, but fans of the latter will be hooked regardless. I think that when you have any 30-year-old mom and 15-year-old daughter, of course the first reference that you’re going to get is Gilmore Girls because that was the seminal example of that and such a beloved show. Mom Georgia (Brianne Howey) and daughter Ginny (Antonia Gentry) are no Lorelai and Rory, though.

Howey, who grew up watching Gilmore Girls and found the comparisons flattering, agreed with her onscreen daughter. Meanwhile, Sara Waisglass, who plays Ginny’s best friend, Maxine — a character that has little in common with Rory’s BFF, Lane — thinks the only real similarity is that it’s a young mother and a young daughter. I think Ginny & Georgia’s its own thing.

We wanted all of our actors to be able to bring out their own unique lived experience, Lampert said, noting that Ginny, like Gentry who plays her, is biracial.

Waisglass, who’s onscreen dad is deaf in real life like the character he plays on the show, celebrated the show’s commitment to diversity. The inclusion of ASL was like a magical experience just on a personal note… We literally got to learn a new language for this role, she said.

Even with all the differences between the two shows, Lampert and Fisher, who both consider themselves fans of Gilmore Girls, were aware of the potential ire from Gilmore Girls fans. I think what was really important for us was for the show to really stand on its own and to be its own thing, mostly because nothing can ever be Gilmore Girls, Lampert said. Instead, the pair wanted to show a realistic mother-daughter relationship, a goal Lampert hopes Ginny & Georgia will inspire others to take up as well.

Decider spoke with both Sara Waisglass and Felix Mallard ahead of the Ginny & Georgia premiere. The two actors shared their thoughts on working with Antonia Gentry, whom they call Toni, along with their favorite lines of dialogue from the show. So we kind of were just able to dial it up a little bit and play and I think that created a really fun back and forth Yeah, Felix, one thing that was fascinating about your character is that he sort of comes across as the stereotype of a “bad boy” in a teen drama at first.

It shows, I think, quite a truthful reflection of what a lot of young guys are going through and are experiencing, you know, quite often a lot of young men will create all these barriers, keep people at arm’s length, because they just don’t know how to deal with their own emotions or deal with how those other people are going to make them feel. Sara, on the flipside, Max is, well, she’s a lot. SW: Honestly, I feel like Max and I have a lot in common.

So I’m curious how you guys both felt about the trajectories of your characters’ relationships, and what it was like working with Toni on that. FM: Yeah, what I loved about Marcus is he had such a strong objective from the very beginning of, as soon as he sees Ginny, he goes, I’m going to be in your life. She just provided this beautiful environment for us to play with the scenes to play with that connection and really, hopefully, show that love, that truthful love.

And so as our characters grew to love each other, I actually grew to love Toni in the most authentic, beautiful way. One thing that I think was really fascinating about your characters’ family dynamic is that your father is deaf and you guys both use sign language like it’s nothing in all your family scenes. SW: Yeah, I think the inclusion of ASL was really brilliant.

Sort of another totally different thing that the show does is delve into teen sexuality. Obviously there’s such witty writing in this show. Do you guys have a particular favorite line of dialogue that either your character or someone else says that you just chow down on as an actor?

FM: This is a reflection of our characters, because my favorite moment is literally, there’s a moment where Marcus says happy birthday to Toni.

What Netflix Show Is Compared To Gilmore Girls?

It’s easy to see why Netflix’s latest series Ginny & Georgia is being compared to Gilmore Girls. The story centers on a young, single mom (Brianne Howey) and her precocious teenage daughter (Antonia Gentry) who move to a beguiling New England town and subsequently find themselves involved in an array of dramas and love triangles. The show, created by Sarah Lampert, even acknowledges these comparisons.

Yet, Ginny and Georgia are a very different mother-daughter duo. For starters, the recently widowed Georgia is a crafty con woman who’s harboring a few big secrets, like, say, embezzlement and potential manslaughter. Not to mention, she prefers hard alcohol to coffee.

She’s far more self-aware than Rory Gilmore could ever be. That being said, Gilmore fans might find comfort in Ginny & Georgia’s abundance of pop culture references and colorful cast of supporting characters, including Ginny’s vibrant best friend Max and her broody twin brother Marcus. But that’s where the comparisons end.

When Did “Ginny And Georgia” Air On Netflix?

“Ginny and Georgia” aired on Netflix on Feb. 24 and has since skyrocketed to popularity. However, not for the right reasons. “Ginny and Georgia” is a great show, but it is undermined by its multitude of problems which can all be summarized into one word: misrepresentation.

Starting with the most blatant and harmful misrepresentation in the show, “Ginny and Georgia” has significant issues in regards to racism. Firstly, Ginny is introduced as a tough and outspoken lead when she calls out her English teacher in the first episode. Yet, her character is undermined when she ignores the many racist comments that her friends make and allows their microaggressions to be normalized.

“But I’ve never seen you pound back jerk chicken,” Hunter said. “The last time I checked, Brodie twerks better than you. And I liked your poem, but your bars could use a little more work, homie.

The discussion, which is crammed with stereotypes, perpetuates the idea that someone is less or more black based on their ability to twerk or the types of food they consume. “Something [the show] addressed poorly was the whole ‘racism Olympics’ thing,” Corsaro said. One of the characters in the show is deaf and communicates solely through American Sign Language, yet many people have pointed out that some of the ASL in the show is actually inaccurate. Furthermore, the show made a sexist joke about Taylor Swift when one character was shaming another for having many boyfriends in the past. “Something else I don’t like that they did was make a joke about Taylor Swift,” Corsaro said.

Another, more trivial, misrepresentation in “Ginny and Georgia” is the way high school students act and talk. Many teenagers have commented on the cringy and unrealistic things that the younger characters do such as using old Snapchat filters, dabbing, and using jargon that is obviously written by middle-aged people. It was also unrealistic to many fans how much partying, drinking, drugs and sex were prevalent in the show amongst teenagers.

“I feel like they completely overdid it with the sex and drugs thing.” Overall, “Ginny and Georgia” had great potential but it is all wasted, for the show falls short in so many ways, especially when it comes to addressing racism, representing ASL, and relating to the younger generation.

Hunter is half Taiwanese, which means there is some diversity in the racial profiling discussions that are part of this series. The mayor, Paul (Scott Porter), falls for her charms like everyone else. Austin’s father is one of Georgia’s secrets.

A Lot to Like in Ginny & Georgia I liked the diverse cast. I liked that Max and Marcus’ father was deaf and they used ASL at home.
