Charlie Brooker and Annabel Jones are taking on 2020. The Black Mirror creators have set a star-studded cast for an upcoming comedy special at Netflix — titled Death to 2020. The comedy event, which the streaming giant describes as a landmark documentary-style special, will star Samuel L. Jackson, Hugh Grant, Lisa Kudrow, Kumail Nanjiani, Tracey Ullman, Samson Kayo, Leslie Jones, Diane Morgan and Joe Keery, and Black Mirror alum Cristin Milioti who starred in the Emmy-winning episode “USS Callister.”
The synopsis from Netflix reads: “2020: A year so [insert adjective of choice here], even the creators of Black Mirror couldn’t make it up… but that doesn’t mean they don’t have a little something to add. Death to 2020 is a comedy event that tells the story of the dreadful year that was — and perhaps still is?” The special will weave together some of the world’s most (fictitious) renowned voices with real-life archival footage spanning the past 12 months and is described as “the cathartic comedy event you’ll never forget about the year you really, really don’t want to remember.”
I’m pretty repellent, actually! And you’ll like my wig.” Death to 2020 is created and executive produced by Brooker and Jones — who have production company Broke and Bones that cites Netflix as an investor — and is produced by Alison Marlow.
The series, which is written by Brooker and exec produced by Jones, has won five Emmys. Brooker and Jones are famously tight-lipped about their projects and Death to 2020 is still in production. The pair, who experimented with interactive TV with Bandersnatch, were open to doing more Black Mirror after the 2019 release of season five of their dystopian — and often eerily prescient — anthology series.
Who Are The Creators Of Black Mirror?
Like most of us, the creators of Black Mirror wish a swift and painful death to the year 2020, and they’ve decided to channel that energy into a new comedy project for Netflix. The streaming network teased an upcoming release today titled Death to 2020, which is from Black Mirror creators Charlie Brooker and Annabel Jones. The clip doesn’t reveal much aside from describing Death to 2020 as a “comedy event” that they’re “still making,” plus a cast that includes Samuel L. Jackson, Hugh Grant, Lisa Kudrow, Kumail Nanjiani, Tracey Ullman, Samson Kayo, Leslie Jones, Diane Morgan, Cristin Milioti, and Joe Keery.
Per Deadline, the press release for the special describes it as “a comedy event that tells the story of the dreadful year that was — and perhaps still is? This landmark documentary-style special weaves together some of the world’s most (fictitious) renowned voices with real-life archival footage spanning the past 12 months.” A release date hasn’t been announced yet, but considering there are only three more weeks left in this hell year, count on seeing whatever this thing is sooner rather than later.
Who Are The Creators Of Black Mirror?
The Black Mirror creators are returning to Netflix with a takedown of all things 2020. As far as years go, 2020 was a pretty bad one. Thankfully, “Black Mirror” creators Charlie Brooker and Annabel Jones agree with that sentiment and have assembled a comedic takedown of the last 12 months courtesy of their new Netflix project, “Death to 2020.”
‘Death to 2020’ is a comedy event that tells the story of the dreadful year that was — and perhaps still is? This landmark documentary-style special weaves together some of the world’s most (fictitious) renowned voices with real-life archival footage spanning the past 12 months.” Netflix has billed “Death to 2020” as “the cathartic comedy event you’ll never forget,” and the project has a suitably memorable cast: “Death to 2020” will feature well-known talents ranging from Samuel L. Jackson and Hugh Grant to Lisa Kudrow, Kumail Nanjiani, Tracey Ullman, Samson Kayo, Leslie Jones, Diane Morgan, Cristin Milioti, and Joe Keery, among others.
Grant referenced the Netflix project in a recent interview that centered on his work in HBO’s recently-released “The Undoing;” where he noted that he would portray a historian (with a fancy wig) who would discuss how repellent 2020 has been. It’s for Netflix,” Grant said. “I’m pretty repellent, actually!
Anyone who saw ‘The Undoing,’ the HBO miniseries co-starring Nicole Kidman that wrapped on Sunday, realizes Grant knows a thing or two about being repellent.” As for Brooker and Jones, the duo’s “Black Mirror” has become one of Netflix’s standout titles. The British show began streaming on Netflix in 2016 and released its three-episode Season 5 in 2019.
