Who Is To Give A Second Season To Better Than Us?

A team of Russian, U.S and Greater China producers is to give a second season to “Better Than Us,” a sci-fi series that was launched as a Netflix Original. The first season tells the tale of a unique, AI-powered, family robot, with the ability to defend itself. When it goes missing, it is sought by Moscow homicide detectives and the ruthless corporation which tried to acquire it.

And now that Cronos Corp has messed things up, Chinese creators want what’s left of their incredible creation, not without purpose,” says the series’ Russia-based showrunner Alex Kessel (Amazon’s “Londongrad”). His Sputnik Vostok company has teamed with Steve Chicorel’s Taiwan-based Organic Media Group, and with Gao Qun’s Mainland China-based Wudi Pictures (aka WD Pictures) for a deal that leverages streaming rights in Greater China. Netflix does not operate in mainland China, which creates the opportunity for rights holders to approach the market independently.

“Netflix has no involvement in the second season of ‘Better Than Us’,” a Netflix spokesman told Variety. After years of shunning the genre, officials in China have in the last two years made a call for more Chinese-themed sci-fi content. The trio are now structuring “Better Than Us” season two as a 10-episode series which will shoot in Beijing and Moscow early in the third quarter of 2021.

“Attuned to the sci-fi market for all these years, when Gao Qun and I watched this series we knew this sort of story would be a match in terms of market and government censorship. Thanks to the brilliance of Alex Kessel we now are in discussion with numerous China streamers to acquire the ongoing series”, said Chicorel.

The world feels lived in and, most importantly for what’s ultimately a grounded family drama, plausible. The future tech isn’t next-level bonkers, but the actors aren’t also trying to pretend that the basic iPad they’re holding is something cutting edge (Another Life). Better Than Us is a Russian sci-fi TV series on Netflix created by Andrey Junkivsky produced by Yellow, Black & White for a Russian platform C1R. After delivering such an incredible season 1, fans cannot help but wonder if the series will have a second season? Is there going to be a Season 2 of Better Than Us?

We’ll have to wait for official statements from the showrunners. According to some news outlets, it has been reported that season 2 is shifting to China from Russia and will return with a total of 10 episodes which were initially scheduled to begin filming in Moscow and Beijing respectively. Seemingly, it should be the third season of the series but from the giant streamer’s point of view, it is still on the second season.

Arisa, an intelligent robot, is extremely beautiful and is programmed to defend herself along with her loved ones. She is created to be a wife, a mother of adopted children and has sentiments to comprehend as she is connected to Sonia. What makes them extensively more dangerous is that they are equipped to slaughter any human beings who try to harm them.

So what happens when robots decide to go on a war against humans? If season 2 happens, the story will further continue with the conflicts between humans and robots.

My wife and I have been much enjoying Netflix’s Better Than Us, a Russian import about near-future robots. (We’ve watched the first nine episodes, which is to say a bit more than half of the first season.) The topic has been covered before, of course, but it’s all in the execution, and the execution here generally seems very good.

The one problem that I’ve noticed is in the subtitles, which are often pretty poor translations of the original. Naturally, I’m not insisting on literal translations; the point of the translation is to capture the sense and the tone of the dialogue, not to provide precise word-for-word identity. It may well be that non-Russian-speakers just won’t notice, but I do think something is lost.
