Today I will talk about the plant podocarp, great choice for gardens, hedges and for those who like flowering plants. See how to cultivate.
The podocarp also known as buddha pine is a coniferous plant and has erect growth. In short, it can have the shape of a tree or a shrub.
Thus, you can choose which format you want to give the species considering the garden design.
For those who like or want to have a tall tree outside, the podocarp plant is a great choice for a garden plant. That’s because it can measure up to 20 meters in height.
However, to have a beautiful and healthy species at home, you need to know how to cultivate it.
See below for simple tips on how to take care of the podocarp and where it can be used.
What is Podocarp?
The podocarp is a plant that can grow a lot and has very resistant roots.
In addition, it is a very versatile species, considering that it can be planted either alone or in a hedge.
At first, it may seem like it’s difficult to cultivate, but it’s not. Both its planting and care do not require much.
Because it has strong roots, it can be planted close to sidewalks and still grows well. It also has good resistance to salt spray and frost.
The plant originates from Asia, has dark green leaves with high brightness, dense and linear. Also, it is a perennial plant and blooms in spring.
Its flowers are beautiful and have a bright yellow coloration!
The same is dioic, that is, there are male and female ones. Females bear reddish and purple fruits.
Therefore, these fruits attract many birds that love the taste of berries.
How to Care and Cultivate Buddha Pine
If you want to have several podocarps, it is interesting that the holes have a space of 20 cm of barrier. This goes for hedges.
Plants placed at a shorter distance cannot grow properly and have an unattractive shape.
When it comes to cultivating the medium-sized plant, a distance of 0.5 linear meter is indicated if you want a dense fence. On the other hand, it can have a distance of up to 1 meter with the most open fence.
Finally, buddha pine doesn’t need constant watering, but it should be regularly watered if the place is very dry.
How Much Does Podocarp Cost?
The plant’s smaller seedlings are inexpensive and can be purchased for around R$5.00 per unit.
Therefore, the expense will depend on the size of the area to be planted.
An average seedling costs around R$ 30.00 each. Here it is a little more expensive.
Therefore, it is worth buying some smaller seedlings, cultivating them and then taking out other seedlings.
Live Fence of Podocarp
By the way, the podocarp is more used in projects of life fence and it looks really beautiful! See some images.
Potted planting
Buddha pine can also be grown in pots without any problem.
The only requirement here is to always prune the plant so that it behaves well in the small space.
The pot needs to be big and have good depth, as the roots need it. One tip is the Vietnamese vases.
