I can’t say if it’ll resolve into a full-blown relationship with Ava, but I do like the idea that everyone had to come to this story with their own journey and their own battle.

What Is Netflix’S Modern-Day Fantasy Series?

Netflix’s modern-day fantasy series Warrior Nun starts with a bang. The first episode shows a squad of women wearing stealth suits and chainmail, crashing into a church shouting about being ambushed by mercenaries wielding “Divinium shrapnel.” They pull an angel’s halo out of their mortally wounded leader.

But then the action grinds to a halt, as the perspective shifts to Ava (Alba Baptista), a dead orphan resurrected by having the halo implanted in her back. After she died under mysterious circumstances and was brought to the church for burial, her corpse was used as a hiding place for the sacred relic of the Order of the Cruciform Sword — a secret society of women warriors dating back to the First Crusade. The most time is spent on Ava, who seems the least deserving of both the halo and the show’s attention.

Sister Lillith (Lorena Andrea) was meant to be next in line for the halo, and she wants to rip it out of Ava to claim her destiny. Through a mix of blurred flashbacks and absolutely unnecessary voiceover narration, she shares how happy she is to no longer be “a freak” and to have a new lease on life, as she flees with the halo to dance, run along the beach, and get rescued by JC (Emilio Sakraya), the world’s hunkiest squatter. “The system is rigged against people like us.

What could be a somewhat compelling monologue is interrupted by Ava’s voiceover: “Just keep talking, pretty boy. I don’t care what you’re talking about. Jillian heads ArqTech, a company building magical portals out of a material kept secret by the Vatican for a millennium.

There are some clever points about the difference between knowledge and faith in the final episode, but viewers have to get through a lot of grandstanding to arrive there. Warrior Nun fails to live up to either, thanks to slow pacing and a lack of self-awareness. There are easy ways to explain that this is a world like the ones in John Wick or Buffy: The Vampire Slayer, where everyone is used to absurd fights breaking out at a moment’s notice.

The whole show feels stretched too thin, the action and character reveals doled out sparingly, presumably so Barry and the writers can extend the show’s mysteries.

Roughly half of Warrior Nun‘s ten-episode season is centered on Ava discovering the world outside her orphanage bed, mostly unaware she’s actually carrying a celestial halo in her back. Ava, a former quadriplegic who spent over a decade indoors at the mercy of a sadistic nun, devotes little time to the emotional upheaval of suddenly being able to walk again. Thus, the writers use her disability as a mere storytelling device, a brief obstacle to provide Ava some character-building trauma (much like in Netflix’s otherwise-winsome comedy Never Have I Ever.)

While she’s quick to call herself a “freak” and a “weirdo” via grating inner-monologue voiceover (reinforcing harmful stereotypes about disabled people), Ava’s beauty soon attracts the eye of J.C. (Emilio Sakraya), a hunky Boho grifter. He, along with his clubbing hipster friends, squat in vacant mansions around Europe for months on end, and invite Ava to join them, teaching her how to dress, flirt and party. While Ava learns the feminine arts, the Order of the Cruciform Sword is on the hunt for their magical halo.

Tristán Ulloa as Father Vincent Father Vincent is the leader of The Order of the Cruciform Sword. He helps ensure the warriors have everything they need and are prepared for their missions. His main job after Ava wakes up is to find her and help her learns how to use her newfound powers.

Toya Turner previously appeared in Easy and Chicago Fire. She is more strategic than the other nuns and uses that to her advantage. Warrior Nun is actually Kristina’s first on-screen role ever.

Lorena starred in the House on Elm Lake in 2017 and No Man’s Land in 2019. Emilio previously appeared in the German series 4 Blocks.
