Among Netflix TV shows this January, you have the first half of Ozark‘s final season, the Kristen Bell-fronted satire The Woman in the House Across the Street from the Girl in the Window (real title), new found-footage horror series Archive 81 and the very last episodes of Ricky Gervais’ After Life. Netflix movies this month, meanwhile, include Kevin James football comedy Home Team, Alyssa Milano thriller The Brazen and Laura Marano rom-com The Royal Treatment.

What Do Netflix Add To Its Library Every Month?

Every month, Netflix adds movies and TV shows to its library. Here are our picks for some of January’s most promising new titles. (Note: Streaming services occasionally change schedules without giving notice.

‘Archive 81’ Season 1 Starts streaming: Jan. 14 Loosely based on an innovative “found footage” horror podcast, “Archive 81” is about two intrepid investigators: Melody Pendras (Dina Shihabi), a journalist shooting video interviews with the residents of a mysterious apartment building in the mid-1990s, and Dan Turner (Mamoudou Athie), a modern-day archivist who becomes obsessed with Melody’s research after he is hired to restore her damaged tapes. The story proceeds along these two characters’ timelines, as they each see signs of a deeper, darker conspiracy that has pulled them into their respective assignments. As with the podcast, the TV version of “Archive 81” is partly about the allure of decaying old media, and the secrets hinted at in the spaces just outside the frame.

Each segment has been overseen by a different creative team, with their own character designs and sensibilities — some darkly comic and some nightmarishly surreal — aided by a voice cast that includes Matthew Goode, Jarvis Cocker and Helena Bonham Carter. All of “The House,” though, uses stop-motion animation, which gives the movie a uniform look and an unsettling feel. ‘Heavenly Bites: Mexico’ Season 1 Starts streaming: Jan. 19 Blending cultural history with pretty pictures of delicious food, this docuseries features Mexican chefs taking familiar elements of the local cuisine and recombining them in exciting and often extreme ways.

But the main selling point of this show is the lovingly shot images of astonishing meals and beverages: wildly colorful micheladas, bags of chips filled with unexpected toppings, jumbo huaraches covered with over a pound of meat. “Heavenly Bites” is a celebration of creativity, featuring reinventions of dishes that are popular around the world.
