I will say once again that it really does feel like cases 1-3 were from a completely different show with completely different characters than case 4, so I don’t feel like it’s appropriate to group them into one score. There seemed to be strong foundations for a fantastic ending to this show.That’s what I thought, at least, until I actually watched that last arc.I don’t think there’s really a way to address the problems I have with Great Pretender unless I spoil some things, simply because I truly thought it was amazing up until that last arc.

He’s still good enough of a character to be likable while also remaining mysterious through these first 3 cases, which says a good deal about the talent of the writers up until episode 15.Basically, I think the characters and story were pretty solid for the first three cases. The first season of Wit Studio’s (Attack on Titan, Vinland Saga) newest series Great Pretender, which is now on Netflix, not only takes its name from the Freddie Mercury song (used as the show’s ending theme), but seems to find character inspiration from Freddie’s interpretation of the lyrics. The series follows Makoto Edamura, a modern-day, small-time con man in Japan, who gets swindled by French gentleman thief Laurent Thierry into following him from Tokyo to Los Angeles. Of the season’s three heists, the L.A. heist is the most like a classic heist movie, constructed like an Ocean’s Eleven-style magic trick.

Edamura is the audience surrogate in Great Pretender, discovering the bigger world of con artistry without knowing every piece of the puzzle during any given plot. That makes the heist’s twists a surprise for both the audience and Edamura, ensuring that all the surprises are also character-motivated. The show’s real trick is to have viewers care more about Edamura than the heist itself.

Mainly, he’s an endearing goofball who is over his head, but somehow trying to still make it work, and learning how he came to be this way helps to make him both someone to sympathize with and root for. The season’s other two heists, in Singapore and London, use criminal action to push this character exploration aspect to the forefront as they delve into other members of Laurent’s gang. This wouldn’t work if the show’s cast weren’t as endearing and interesting as they are.

The series’ action scenes are a showcase of Wit Studio’s unique animation talent. Set pieces range from characters fleeing quickly through small, labyrinthine alleyways to planes zipping under bridges and between buildings over Singapore. It’s often accomplished using movements or camera placements that would either be impossible or completely impractical to pull off in live-action filmmaking.

No longer involved in the hit series, it seems the studio found the opportunity to be a bit more ambitious and creative with their projects, and demonstrate what they are capable of. If Vinland Saga was the studio looking back, Great Pretender feels like a signal of where the studio wants to go from now on away from the drabe and drearier. However there are few shows that, regardless of a person’s predilections, I would suggest without a second thought.

Her character was interesting to watch and listen to because of how much she contributes to the plot despite not being the main character, she’s a great supporting character and her voice actress did a great job in the role. It draws a lot from Jazz music and it is bombastic and exciting for the intense scenes and heartwarming for the emotional scenes.

The Plot Does Keep You Guessing The plot keeps you guessing as to how some of the cases will end but if you’re smart you’ll notice how Team Confidence takes down their targets and notice how it’s repeated throughout the arcs but you’ll be guessing for the first few cases at least. The Story Is Great but It’s Not My Favorite Great Pretender (2020) is a stunning anime with spectacular visuals, a fun story, a great voice cast, and soundtrack.

I did enjoy the anime but it’s not the most amazing anime I’ve seen, but it was amazing when it came to the production values of the anime itself. It is worth your time but not necessarily your money when it’s released on blu-ray unless Wit Studio is your favorite anime studio. I do think it was worth my time to watch it because I enjoyed it a lot, it’s just not an anime that I feel I have to own for my anime collection.

It’s like a splinter in my mind, and I have to exorcise it right away if we’re going to ever talk about anything else.Anyway, welcome to season two of Nicky I was hoping we could go the entire column without commenting on it just like the show but here we are. Great Pretender part two has quite a few!

Is this show really Great or Just Pretendin’? There’s another character introduced in this arc who also tries to go out with a bang, and let’s just say it doesn’t go so hot.Like, it’s not bad! And the character stuff is still the part of the writing I like the most about the show but with a plan this big, I feel like there are parts where I don’t get to interact with them as much as with other arcs and with the subject matter of the current plan I definitely felt a LOT less sympathetic to some of them coming out of it.

That does bring up another issue I had, which I only fully realized when I was going back through my screencaps: I missed my favorite characters from the previous arcs. This one focuses a lot more on Laurent, Makoto, and Makoto’s estranged dad Oz, but this comes at the expense of Cynthia, Abby, and Abby’s middle finger.As you can see, they’re still around and still doing great stuff (and flipping people off), but they’re interesting characters, and I just like it when they’re more front and center. But the story just kinda forgets about them after this point, and they go back to being props to show how bad the bad guys are.

I also hope nobody is going into this arc hoping for some kind of sweeping redemptive character arc to round out Laurent’s story. Not that they don’t try. Great Pretender ultimately realizes that he was a shitty dad, no matter what the intentions.

Don’t get me wrong, I don’t mind Great Pretender being silly, but this kind of buffoonishness really runs counter to the spirit of the first three arcs. There had to be better ways for Makoto to pull one over on Laurent. It also totally makes me question the lasting effectiveness of the finale.
