Netflix’s Country Comfort is a musical sitcom about an aspiring singer named Bailey who nannies for a handsome widower and his music-loving kids. Her character isn’t based on a real country singer (or nanny), but because of the nature of the show, she did need to be played by someone who could sing. That’s why Katharine McPhee, American Idol Season 5 runner-up, got on board.
“When she first came in, I was scared,” Lucas told USA Today. “I knew she could sing, I knew she was breathtakingly beautiful, and I knew she could act.” But since Lucas hadn’t seen her comic chops, she was worried McPhee couldn’t pull the jokes off.
She told USA Today that, growing up, she helped care for the kids at her church’s nursery and also nannied for her drama teacher’s kids. McPhee said she was a pretty strict caretaker. “As a mother, hopefully, and as a nanny, I tend to follow the rules and try to keep a schedule,” the actor said.
Meanwhile, Bailey is a little bit of a hot mess as a nanny, often prioritizing her long-term career goals ahead of her day job. “[Bailey] quickly realizes that she can selfishly still pursue [singing] by dragging the kids along to auditions,” McPhee teased to TV Insider. “She never gives up this idea of becoming a star.”

What Kind Of Audience Did Covid Have At The Beginning?
It’s a sitcom, so at the beginning, we had a live audience, which was great. Having a live audience there made the transition from theater to TV more comfortable because I was used to having their energy there. This is the closest a show comes to theater because of the live audience, the music and just the overall vibe.
My dad, brother, sister and I also went to a rodeo in Wyoming once. I pulled from those moments, and I also got a lot of inspiration from different country shows I’ve seen. I love the country world.
We got to film the first four episodes during that time, but then we couldn’t go back to film the last six episodes until September. So there was a period when I was sad because we didn’t get to finish our project, but I was excited to get back. The cast also felt like a family because we’d worked together before, so in September, [the experience] was much more fluid.
It was an incredible experience working with her. I learned a lot from her.

Who Plays Brody In The First Episode Of Country Comfort?

When Tuck (Ricardo Hurtado), 15, answers the door, Bailey asks to use the phone to call a tow for her broken-down truck. He mistakes Bailey for the family’s new nanny, and the other children come to see what’s happening: Brody (Jamie Martin Mann), 16, Dylan (Griffin McIntyre), 12, and 6-year-old Chloe (Pyper Braun).
She’s definitely not the nanny. The attractive Bailey is immediately threatening to Summer. When the tornado sirens go off, they all rush to the basement.
The Trapp Family Singers have time-traveled and moved to Texas. While Bailey is no nun, she’s a good person and can sing. Noting how derivative this storyline is (even the kids mention it soon enough) is not a criticism.
Plus, these children don’t like their father’s girlfriend either. CC_102_Unit_00014RC2 crop.jpg Katharine McPhee as Bailey and Pyper Braun as Chloe in an episode of Country Comfort (Netflix © 2021/Ali Goldstein) The casting of the main characters is inspired, and in the 10 episodes of the first season, we learn that all of the children have talent. McPhee, the runner-up on Season 5 of American Idol in 2006, is excellent in the role of the somewhat lost Bailey, whose life is like a country song.
Braun as Chloe is very young, and it’s easy to see she’s watching her coach (or her mom) off-camera for cues, but she makes it work. Dylan appoints himself Bailey’s manager while the other two teens are interested in girls, especially their neighbor Jo (Kirrilee Berger). The themes of this heartfelt series are family, loss, dealing with grief, finding one’s purpose in life, and the many kinds of love that make a country song go around.
Who Is Katharine Mcphee In Country Comfort?
Katharine McPhee in Country Comfort. That show’s stated purpose is to discover a new star, and discover her we did, all the way to the final two, where her Boston Conservatory-trained pop-contemporary stylings ran into the freight train that was Taylor Hicks’s Soul Patrol. Then, in 2012, NBC cast her in its Broadway-set musical-theater fantasia Smash, putting her at the end of the show’s trailer with an and introducing Katharine McPhee tag.
She attained a notably sassy Twitter presence. In other words, she’s an incredibly peculiar celebrity in that she is very famous despite it being not entirely clear how many people actually like her. All of which is to lay the groundwork for the fact that the next introduction of Katharine McPhee happens this week on Netflix with the premiere of Country Comfort, a multi-cam, broadest of broad comedies that repackages McPhee the actress and McPhee the musician as a country star.
McPhee stars as Bailey Hart, an aspiring country singer/songwriter who finds herself dumped by her boyfriend and bandmate for a younger blonde, and stranded in the rain (without a phone, it seems) when her pickup truck breaks down. Which is how she ends up on the doorstep of a family that is, quite coincidentally, looking for a nanny. Eddie Cibrian plays Beau, a semi-recent widower and father of five kids, ranging from teen to toddler, who have burned through nine previous nannies.
Bailey is comically inept and unsure of herself in her new position, a thorn in the side of Summer (Janet Varney), Beau’s new girlfriend and our resident C.C. Babcock analogue, and a target of resentment for Cassidy (Shiloh Verrico), the second-youngest kid and the one most angrily reeling from her mother’s death. The strong Nanny vibes don’t seem to be an accident. The aggressive sitcomminess at play here definitely feels corny, and it really hangs a lantern on the fact that McPhee is a particularly odd fit for a country girl.
Add to that the fact that Cibrian’s real-life wife LeAnn Rimes shows up as herself at one point, and McPhee has a lot competition for her star to shine. It’s hard to say who Country Comfort is for, exactly, and whether Katharine McPhee will appeal to anyone looking for a very basic, corny family sitcom. Country Comfort’s complete first season drops on Netflix March 19th.
