Thunder Force Trailer Review

When Thunder Force’s trailer first debuted, it seemed like fans of the impeccably talented Melissa McCarthy and Octavia Spencer held a collective breath – the trailer was, for lack of a kinder phrase, not great. Well, we’re here to tell you, with a huge sigh of relief, that is not the case. Scientist Emily Stanton (Spencer) develops a process to give superpowers to regular people, but accidentally imbues her estranged best friend Lydia (McCarthy) with incredible abilities, and so the two women must become the first superhero team and save Chicago from the clutches of The King (Bobby Cannavale).

Unexpectedly, the humour isn’t as crass as you might think, and those who couldn’t stomach the toilet-raunch of films like Bridesmaids will be pleasantly surprised that the comedy stays away from too-gross gags. Instead, it blends tropes of the superhero genre with humour to make them relatable (for instance, the constant comment about how bad the super-suits smell which, let’s be real, is a legit question we have for every Marvel hero ever). Netflix It has to be said that McCarthy does a lot of heavy lifting (pun intended) with a so-so script, her impeccable comedic timing rescuing the flatter lines and turning the better-written ones into moments of howl-inducing laughter.

Populated by the likes of Cannavale as a conniving mayoral candidate, Pom Klementieff (Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy) as a psychopathic laser-shooting villain, and Jason Bateman (Ozark) as half-crab-and half-man, it’s one that makes you laugh at almost every turn. Neither Emily nor Lydia are punchlines to anyone’s jokes, except their own. Their humour is the same humour you’d find between long-time friends: over-the-top, a bit stupid, sometimes self-deprecating, but not mean.

Though it’s hardly a scathing satire of superhero movies, that wasn’t what we were expecting. Instead, about 20 minutes in, it’ll hit you: ‘Wow, this is surprisingly enjoyable.’ 3 5 Thunder Force is now available to watch on Netflix. Digital Spy’s digital magazine is back!

THUNDER FORCE: STREAM IT OR SKIP IT? The Gist: Some monumental crap happened in 1983: Cosmic rays bombarded Earth, causing sociopaths, and only sociopaths, to become superpowered. She was a gifted student, and therefore the target of bullies, which, per the mandates of lazy screenplays, means she needs a bestie bodyguard.

Shockingly, Miscreants haven’t turned the planet into a fascist hell, but are just crooks on crime sprees and whatnot. Lydia (McCarthy) works schlepping shipping containers around a dock with a forklift, swilling Old Style tallboys on her break. She’s a fan of Da Bears and Da Cubs and wears a VAN HALEN KICKS ASS shirt.

So of course, Lydia fiddles with a thingamajig when she shouldn’t and ends up accidentally getting eight hypodermics in the face, giving her super strength. Anyway, the scheme sure seems like something a whole lotta ridiculous violence could solve, if anyone cares. Performance Worth Watching: The inimitable Ms. Spencer, so good in so many things, rolls her eyes impatiently at McCarthy’s antics in one scene, and one can’t help but wonder if she’s breaking character.

Our Take: Seriously, Slayer’s debut album came out in late ’83, and it’s highly unlikely young Lydia was on the ground floor of the thrash metal revolution. Took me right out of the movie. Jokes range from a weird love affair between Lydia and Bateman’s crab guy, multiple attempts to invoke Glenn Frey nostalgia and a gut-churning recurring gag in which McCarthy obstreperously slurps down raw chicken.

You’d think inspiring them to be funny would be a no-brainer like toddler bumper bowling, but the ball bounces out of the lane, past the hot dog rack and shoe rental, out the door, through the parking lot, into the road and up the on-ramp to the southbound highway to comedy hell, which is a long way of saying something should be easy as pie but is actually a pie with poop in it. Thunder Force plays like a movie in which everyone got paid; hooray for them. Thunder Force?

The plot follows a Chicago forklift operator, Lydia (Melissa McCarthy), who reunites with her childhood best friend, Emily (Octavia Spencer). The latter has devoted her life to scientific research that accidentally unlocks superpowers to fight deadly mutant criminals.

She’s better playing comic relief in dramatic films (i.e. the pie scene in “The Help”). In “Thunder Force,” she seems to be phoning it in a bit, forced to play the serious straight woman to McCarthy’s zany antics. McCarthy is one of our funniest comedians, once again delivering gross-out gags (pouring beer on her cereal) and making funny voices (impersonating Urkel).

Ironically, her best roles come from other filmmakers, namely Paul Feig (“Bridesmaids,” “The Heat,” “Spy”) and Marielle Heller (“Can You Ever Forgive Me?”). Fans should applaud the casting of diverse, plus-sized superheroes that look more like regular Americans than unrealistically skinny supermodels that don’t believably pack a punch. Likewise, the “Bechdel Test” scenes of women talking about something other than men is a positive trend for Hollywood, but it would be nice if they had better material.

The movie languishes for 48 minutes (!!!) before the superhero team finally gets out into the world to start fighting crime, thwarting a robbery at a convenience store. It’s no coincidence that the film picks up the second we meet Jason Bateman, who steals the show as a half-human, half-crustacean henchman. We’ve become so used to him in dramatic roles (“Ozark”) that it’s a great reminder of his comedy chops (“Arrested Development”).
