Yowza! The sheriff in BIG SKY will now be the sheriff in JOE PICKETT as well. Worlds collide! https://t.co/PzToFqIMuI — C.J. Box has been regularly trickling out new information about the long-awaited “Joe Pickett” television series, and this week, he announced an actor coming to the show will be familiar to viewers of another series based on his books.
“Yowza! The sheriff in BIG SKY will now be the sheriff in JOE PICKETT as well. Worlds collide!”
The author included a follow-up message, congratulating Gallagher on the role. They will join New Zealand actor Michael Dorman, best known for his roles “The Invisible Man” remake and the Apple TV+ series “For All Mankind,” who has been cast as Pickett. Guill will portray Marybeth Pickett, wife to Joe and mother to two young daughters.
Who Wrote The Highway?
Big Sky, an adaptation (mostly) of Box’s 2013 thriller The Highway, is set to air on ABC on November 17, developed and written by the much-decorated producer David E. Kelley. Michael Barson: You were already a successful author with your Joe Pickett series, which was being published by Putnam on an annual basis, when you decided to write Back of Beyond, the first book to feature Cody Holt as your new protagonist. Suffice it to say that some ideas and locations I want to write about simply won’t work as Joe Pickett books.
Article continues after advertisement Most readers say the Cody Hoyt/Cassie Dewell books are darker than the Joe Pickett novels. MB: Cassie Dewell, one of the main characters in The Highway, would soon take over what had begun as a series starring Cody. I started writing The Highway and I had to set it aside for over six months while I completed a Joe Pickett book.
It’s important to me that my readers stay on alert and that anything can happen within the novels. Article continues after advertisement I also kind of fell in love with the character of Cassie Dewell. I wanted to write about her more than I wanted to write about other characters.
You and your representatives must have had many conversations about the best-selling Joe Pickett series with film and television producers over the past ten years or so…Are you surprised that no one has yet optioned the Joe Pickett series as well? CJB: It’s a familiar story and one I’ve heard from many other authors. The Joe Pickett books have been optioned three times at least to be made into a television series, but none was ever made.
MB: As an Executive Producer on Big Sky, you were probably consulted on some of the decisions David E. Kelly made to expand the original story in certain directions… Can you share an example of a story point you may have helped him resolve? David has purchased all of the Cassie Dewell novels to adapt. What are your hopes for the Joe Pickett and Cassie Dewell series over the next ten years?

Who Is America’S Favorite Game Warden?
On March 8, 2022, Joe Pickett, America’s favorite game warden, returns to action in Shadows Reel, the next novel from #1 New York Times bestselling author C.J. Box. Joe Pickett, who was first introduced in Box’s 2001 debut Open Season, has gone on to star in twenty-one books to date, including, most recently, this year’s Dark Sky. That book followed Joe as he accompanied a tech baron on an elk hunting trip that went terribly wrong when a cold-blooded killer emerges hot on their trail—their sights set squarely on the tech giant, with only Joe standing in their way.
Check out the striking cover art and exciting plot details below. A day before the three Pickett girls come home for Thanksgiving, Marybeth Pickett finds an unmarked package at the front door of the library where she works. When she opens the package she finds a photo album that belonged to an infamous Nazi official.
And why did they leave it with her? When she finds the name of a deceased local man who was likely in the unit, Joe visits the man’s son—only to find him brutally tortured and murdered. Even as he grasps the true threat his quarry presents, Nate swoops in for the kill—and a stunning final showdown.
He lives outside Cheyenne with his family. That, of course, is hot on the heels of Big Sky, which just wrapped a very successful first season on ABC, which follows Box’s series dubbed the “Highway Quartet,” a separate series that stands apart from Joe, Nate Romanowski, and the rest of his cast in Wyoming. In the meantime, for more information on the books and the TV projects, make sure you’re following the author on Facebook, Twitter, and his official website.
Additionally, he co-hosts ThrillerTalk, a new podcast with K.J.
