After a good bit of hinting, Elisabeth Shue made her return to the Karate Kid universe in a pair of Cobra Kai Season 3 episodes. She plays a key role, reuniting with both Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio) and Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka). 2020 was a long year, but one positive that came was in the late summer, when Netflix dropped both previously existing seasons of Cobra Kai, the 34-years-later sequel to The Karate Kid that previously lived on YouTube premium.

Well, we have good news: Ali is back. The show had previously teased Ali’s return by having Daniel and Johnny talk about her during their brief time hanging out at a bar, and a tease previously saw Johnny connect with Ali on Facebook. Season 3 brings that connection full circle; Johnny contacts Ali on Facebook (and Miguel helping him craft his social media message and personality make for some of the best parts of the season), and eventually they meet up for lunch.

The four of them have a great time at the party, reminiscing about the old days and putting a lot of things into perspective for our two heroes who somewhat literally come from very different schools. Ali, who sees the good in both men, helps them realize that, in a lot of ways, they believe in the same sort of things. Amanda, as the viewer surrogate, helps to let Ali bring the two guys together through their mutual appreciation of her.

While Daniel and Johnny haven’t spoken to her since their years in the dojo (prior to the events of Season 3), Daniel does tell Johnny he keeps up with her over Facebook. In Season 3, of course, we see how this all plays out. Ali, home for the holidays, reconnects with both Johnny and Daniel, and even makes friends with Daniel’s wife, Amanda.

I said, “Why, why do you care so much?” He said, “You have no idea how important The Karate Kid is in my life.” He told me what a great movie it is and how much he loved Cobra Kai, and that it would just be devastating — “devastating,” he kept saying — for the fans and for the memory of The Karate Kid if I wasn’t [on the show].

I think it’s probably a similar fanbase, The Boys and Cobra Kai. Because at the time, Karate Kid, it sounded like, what kind of movie is that? It was my first movie, and Ralph was this big movie star.

In [Cobra Kai], we talked and communicated and acted together, and I loved that. So that was really surprising and wonderful to almost start a new relationship really. I think it was in deference to wanting Johnny to feel that he could go back to his relationship [with Carmen], which meant so much to him, without feeling that he had anything to feel conflicted about.

The two scenes saying goodbye to the guys — the first one I filmed was with Ralph, and there was no part of me that felt, Oh, this is an emotional scene, saying goodbye to Ralph. I mean, that sounds pretty intense, but you know, your first crush, your first love — so to be able to experience the emotions that you felt for your first crush again… it really was a wonderful setup for these characters to be able to feel a loss of innocence and a reconnection and respect. [Laughs] Billy and Ralph and I have been talking a little bit more, doing publicity and re-getting to know each other, and we’re all struck with the fact that this one movie has shaped all three of our lives in such an intense way.

The two then venture to Golf N’ Stuff – you know, the same place where Daniel’s mom drove him and Ali on their date in The Karate Kid (which set the bar for this author’s expectation of dates). Johnny and Ali play air hockey, mini golf and basketball and nearly kiss before Ali gets a text from her mom reminding her to go to a Christmas party. She invites Johnny, and the nostalgia continues in Episode 10, December 19.

As Ali and Johnny part, they hug but don’t kiss. She tells him to get out of here because he has a future to find. Johnny reveals he loves her.

I loved it. I was so excited about the idea of her coming back, he says, mentioning how the show’s first two seasons revealed how much she’s still part of Johnny and still a part of the rivalry between Daniel and Johnny and how important she is to the story and to their two lives. And it didn’t hurt that she had some friends who were fans telling her that she must do the show.

It turns out she’s also really competitive. Johnny really loves Carmen, he really loves (her son, Miguel), he reasons. While Johnny and Ali were momentarily transported to their teenage years during their time together, the reality is They’ve grown… You realize that when you bump into somebody later in life – it worked then, we still love each other but we can’t move from here forward.

TVLINE | Using social media in the storyline starting in Season 2 seemed like the perfect way to tease her return. SCHLOSSBERG | From the very beginning we loved the idea of playing her character, at first, through the eyes of Johnny looking at her life through social media. We knew that Johnny was interested in her and we loved the idea of him seeing her on Facebook and seeing her life which is seemingly perfect.

Ultimately, of course, it was just poetic having her be the force that brings Daniel and Johnny together at the end of the season. TVLINE | Let’s talk a bit about Ali’s effect on Johnny. Her involvement in those scenes with Johnny and Daniel at the country club ends up causing these two guys who can’t seem to take a moment to reflect on their own roles and whatever issues they may have to perhaps realize that maybe they’re not so different after all.

TVLINE | With Cobra Kai already renewed for a fourth season, is there any chance we’ll see Ali again? HEALD | We won’t comment on what our future plans are with anybody who’s a legacy character from those movies other than to say that we have a long story left to tell.

Cobra Kai Creators Discuss Righting Ali Mills’ Karate Kid 2 Story The third season of Cobra Kai became another worthy trip down memory lane catching up with the bulk of The Karate Kid universe. Toward the end of the season, the series unveiled arguably the biggest crowning jewel from the 1984 John G. Avildsen original in Elizabeth Shue, who played Ali Mills. She helped set the story in motion stuck in the love triangle between Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio) and Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka).

Taking exception to Johnny’s bullying ways, Ali breaks up with him and ends up with Daniel until the character was written off in the 1986 sequel Part II. As TKKP2 begins, Daniel explained to his sensei Mr. Miyagi (Pat Morita) that Ali left him for a UCLA football player and damaged the car in the process. Cobra Kai creators Josh Heald, Jon Hurwitz, and Hayden Schlossberg wanted to undo that for Ali’s legacy and spoke to Insider about what they did to fix that.

So we tried to think of a way to make a way that didn’t make Daniel out to be a liar but also gave Ali her own side of the story. So we knew when we brought her on the show we would find a way to explain and get her side of the story. Ultimately, when Daniel and Ali’s break up was brought up in Cobra Kai’s season three finale December 19, Ali explained the football player in question was actually a friend and Daniel’s own paranoia thinking it was more ended it.

It only took the woman they both loved to reach the epiphany that they’re both far more alike than they realized. Season three of Cobra Kai is available to stream on Netflix.
