The film reunites McCarthy with director Ted Melfi and co-star Chris O’Dowd, who she worked with on the 2014 movie St. Vincent. From there, the nearly three-minute long clip shows the change in the couple’s relationship as they tackle grief after a tragedy.

She just returned to our screens with emotional comedy-drama The Starling. After having a limited theatrical release on September 17th, Theodore Melfi’s film opened on Netflix on September 24th. It’s already raced up the charts to become of the streaming giant’s most popular titles right now.

The film follows a couple, the Maynards, as they deal with the death of their baby daughter. While Jack (Chris O’Dowd) has checked into a psychiatric hospital, Lily (McCarthy) is at home, dealing with her feelings on her own. Hollywood has been trying to make this movie for years, with the script by Matt Harris being on the Black List – the list of the most-liked unproduced screenplays – since 2005.

Now that it’s finally out in the world, however, critics are tearing it apart. On Rotten Tomatoes, The Starling stands at just 22%, with the critics consensus saying: “Burying its talented cast and worthy themes under mounds of heavy-handed melodrama, The Starling is a turkey.” This is one of those times when audiences have a completely different reaction, though.

Likewise, Netflix users are clearly impressed with it. McCarthy and Diggs are also involved in another movie that’s on its way — Disney’s The Little Mermaid remake, in which McCarthy stars as villain Ursula and Diggs voices Sebastian the crab, coming to theaters in May 2023. What Was The Name Of Melissa Mccarthy’S Film Released This Year?

Though the Covid-19 pandemic continues, Melissa McCarthy has already had a film release this year, Thunder Force (for which the reviews were… not so positive). As if Lilly’s troubles weren’t bad enough, a starling begins to harass her and she becomes comically obsessed with trying to kill it. The comedy-drama flick will have a limited theatrical release tomorrow, September 17, and will be available to stream on Netflix next Friday, September 24.

While our own review hasn’t been released yet, the critical response is looking pretty brutal so far. Caryn James from The Hollywood Reporter thought McCarthy, O’Dowd, and Kline deserve way better than this “misfire.” James criticized everything from the horrible script, the trite and predictable storyline, to the abundance of cliches.

Overall, James noted: With a predictable trajectory and cringeworthy metaphors, The Starling is so slushily sentimental it makes the typical tearjerker look like a noir. Despite the lived-in performances from its three high-profile stars, this attempt at heartfelt drama is hopelessly by-the-numbers. Elizabeth Weitzman of The Wrap also criticized the “shallow” script by Harris.

Weitzman also commented on the terrible metaphors and the too-familiar aspect of The Starling, noting overall: Viewers may be surprised to find they’ve happened upon a movie that would feel far more at home on the Hallmark Channel. See, I told you critics were picking this movie apart. He criticized the under-utilized side characters like Olyphant, a comment we saw above.

Like previous critics, he considered the dramedy too predictable and full of overqualified actors who are too under-utilized. Meyer did comment that the third act of the movie was a little more enjoyable, but not enough to make it a good film. Meyer was pretty disappointed with the flick, noting: The fast-forward button was made for The Starling.

While the critical response of the Melissa McCarthy-led flick has been pretty brutal so far, you might actually enjoy the comedy-drama.
