There is a phrase, erroneously attributed to Albert Einstein, which hides behind its meaning a great truth concerning thelife of bees, and ours: “If the bee disappeared from the face of the earth, man would only have four years of life left”. Regardless of who made this statement, it is clear that he was very clear on the fundamental role in the ecosystem of these pollinating insects. And he was right to sell.
The inestimable value of bees is closely related to the survival of the human being and the entire planet. To remember this, and to celebrate their fundamental role, the World bee day, the World Bee Day.
Established in 2017 by the UN, this day was founded in honor of Anton Jansa, a Slovenian breeder who is credited with pioneering some beekeeping techniques still used today. World Bee Day is celebrated on May 20, with the aim of celebrating theimportance of bees, but also to inform and sensitize all people about the role of these insects.
Thanks to their pollination activity, in fact, bees make a very important contribution to preservation of biodiversity. Furthermore, a good percentage of the food we eat is the result of their pollination work, which today is however put at risk by pollution, climate change and the degradation of natural habitats. Bees today they are at serious risk of extinction.
According to Fai, the Federation of Italian Beekeepers, the population of bees and wasps has decreased by 40% in just 30 years.
Here because World Bee Day was born, to sensitize people and public opinion on the importance of these insects, for their protection and safeguard. At the same time, however, politicians, beekeepers and experts come together to define new and concrete activities to put an end to this emergency.
A single day is not enough, of course, but it is still a beginning for draw attention to bees, and in general on the other pollinators which activity is of vital importance for all humanity.
The bees, in fact, by collecting the nectar from the pollen, transfer it from flower to flower, thus allowing pollination and conservation of biodiversity. Just as the worker bees have the merit of transforming pollen into honey. How will we do without them?
