Somatic Experiencing: what is it?
Starting from the literal meaning, the expression “Somatic Experiencing” means the experience of trauma. To put it in other words, it is a psycho-physiological method which reviews the experience of a trauma, of a bereavement, of the malaise caused by a disease such as cancer, of a period of great stress.

Most of the time, in fact, our body tends to somatize everything we feel and which, due to a variety of reasons, we are unable to communicate by voice.
Developed by the American psychologist Peter Levine, this method, therefore, aims to “treat” stress, anguish and somatized malaise, trying to atone for it and eliminate it from the body.
Somatic Experiencing: what is it and how does it work?
Somatic Experiencing starts from the observation of the facts at the neurophysiological level to achieve healing from trauma and expiation of it from the body. How? Through a path of listening to the body, a period in which the patient returns to listening to himself and to know the signals that the body sends him, without being afraid of instinctive reactions that block the healing process.
Somatic Experiencing, what is the disease of the body
From these premises, it is necessary to understand why the body late manifests signs of a trauma or a negative period in the past.
In many cases, in fact, even if we apparently feel physically well and have nothing, our body responds late to our discomfort and manifests it to us in the least opportune moments. The consequence is therefore to feel pain, especially physical, even for no apparent reason.
The truth is that stress, anxiety, anguish and all the negative feelings derived from bad life experiences block us and they imprison us in time, even if we think we have overcome them and we feel better. They nestle deep inside us, without even asking us for permission to reside and stay.
Somatic Experiencing: what it is and the most useful techniques
Among the most widespread and used Somatic Experiencing techniques is the breathing and the meditation. The first, above all, helps to dissolve the physical tension accumulated over time. It thus allows to free the jaws, to let go of the legs and hands to tremble and the soul to a liberating cry. In other words, the body is starting to get rid of the trauma.
The second, on the other hand, is better known with the name of “rooting” and allows the patient to connect with the earth and nature, to let go of the tensions on the floor and thus get rid of the bad energies that the body had blocked for a long time. .
