After bubble tea, the new trend drink of the moment is called Kombucha Tea. This particular tea has oriental origins, a very particular process that leads to its creation and numerous benefits for health and beauty: by many it is considered as a real elixir.
What kombucha tea is used for: what it is
Kombucha tea is a fermented drink that is very popular in recent times but has very ancient origins. In fact, it was born in Manchuria in 415 AD for curative purposes: according to legend it was invented by Korean doctor Kombu to cure the Japanese emperor. Others attribute its genesis in China even before the birth of Christ, but what is common in these legends are the healing properties of kombucha tea.
It is, in essence, about a sweetened tea (green or black) fermented through the so-called ‘mother’, a culture of bacteria and yeasts.
Often its flavor, slightly sparkling and quite strong, is diluted by adding other natural aromas such as fruit and spices. The consumption of this drink, not only for its particular taste but above all for its health benefits, is becoming more and more popular in Europe under the influence of American fashion.
The mother is called in technical jargon SCOBY ie Symbiotic Colony of Bacteria and Yeast: this has the appearance of a gel which when it comes into contact with oxygen starts the fermentation.
Kombucha tea, what it is for: the benefits and contraindications
Since kombucha tea is a probiotic, like all fermented foods, it is a food capable of improving our intestinal flora and enrich the microbiota, giving a great help to intestinal regularity and to the health of this system of our body.
It is said – but it has not yet been proven – that kombucha tea does not have only these property but many others. It would cure asthma, dysentery, hypertension, help improve and speed up your metabolism and strengthen the immune system, it would also have a detox effect on the liver. Even according to some it would be a drink able to improve libido. To confirm these hypotheses, however, there is still no scientific evidence.
