What Is The Name Of The Peruvian Master Who Resurfaces For The First Time In Seven Years With A Strange, Hypnotic Psychodrama In Only The Loosest Terms?
Photo: Glen Wilson/Netflix/GLEN WILSON/NETFLIX © 2021 The pleasure of monitoring Netflix’s feature output month in and month out lies in the unexpected, the surprise in finding that the service has plopped a gem into the library without any fanfare. Such is the case in October, as a Peruvian master resurfaces for the first time in seven years with a strange, hypnotic psychodrama in only the loosest terms. Claudia Llosa’s in fine company among the rest of the offerings, too: a Turkish cop flick with a powerhouse lead performance, a handsomely photographed salute to Dutch valor during wartime, and an anime reworking one of Netflix’s all-time most-streamed titles.
Amanda (María Valverde) and her daughter Nina (Guillermina Sorribes Liotta) have come to an idyllic country house for the summer, and quickly fall in with neighbor Carola (Dolores Fonzi) and her unsettling son David (Emilio Vodanovich). Something’s not right with the kid, and after a “transmigration” of the soul meant to cleanse any bad vibes, he only gets creepier. Mystical, elemental wisps of the malevolent swirl around the lush getaway as the two adult women develop a fragile yet deep bond, growing close amidst a mounting feeling of unease articulated more through destabilizing formal juxtapositions and jarring transitions than dialogue.
With a gaze that could crumple steel and a mustache that would make Tom Selleck sick with envy, he brings lived-in grit to the role of chief inspector Harun, a man in the crosshairs. Kidnapped and attacked by his taxi driver, Harun kills the man in self-defense and flees the scene, only to discover the corpse hanging from a crane at his precinct the next day. From there, the plot spins itself into a tangle as further dangers befall Harun and the seeming conspiracy to undo him emerges from the shadows, climaxing in a multi-twist finale that takes an unexpected route to an inevitable outcome.
There’s Someone Inside Your House This slasher throwback of the I Know What You Did Last Summer variety isn’t trying to reinvent the wheel, mostly sticking with the tried-and-true “teens with dark secrets get picked off” formula, and yet it’s a functional model of the traditional wheel all the same. The killer’s gimmick is decently distinctive, as he dons photorealistic masks of his victims in each slaying to create the impression that they’re murdering themselves. The same can’t be said for his prey, archetypes with one trait apiece, though the pariah among losers Ollie benefits from honed acting courtesy of Théodore Pellerin.
The disappointing reveal clarifying the killer’s identity and why he’s terrorizing protagonist Makani (Sydney Park) has more in common with morally instructive after-school specials than horror. My Brother, My Sister A high degree of emotional nuance is required to overcome the inherent gooeyness of movies about estranged adult siblings bonding after years spent apart. (Case in point: You Can Count On Me, which only works due to the efforts of one of our greatest living writer-directors and actors to match his talents.)

The 2008 comedy stars Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly as middle-aged men still living with their single parents who are forced to move in together when their parents get married. It’s an absurdist comedy with a very silly premise, but it’s really just an excuse for director Adam McKay to let Ferrell and Reilly’s comedic instincts run wild for 90 straight minutes. Kate Winslet and Cameron Diaz star as two strangers who decide to swap houses for the holidays; Diaz leaves her Los Angeles mansion for a small cottage in England, while Winslet trades her country life for Hollywood.
Titanic Paramount Nothing says epic like “Titanic.” James Cameron’s three-hour, Oscar-dominating drama still stands tall over two decades later as a towering achievement. Both board the R.M.S. Titanic on the ship’s doomed voyage, as Cameron captures love and loss with thrills and chills to spare.
The film charts the real-life investigation into the Zodiac killer murders throughout the late 1960s and early ’70s in the San Francisco Bay Area. The story is told through the eyes of a young cartoonist played by Jake Gyllenhaal, and the stellar ensemble cast includes Mark Ruffalo, Robert Downey Jr., Anthony Edwards, Chloe Sevigny and John Carroll Lynch. This is the King Arthur legend as told by director Guy Ritchie, so there’s a visceral nature to the action, underlined by Daniel Pemberton’s propulsive score.
The film hits Netflix on Oct. 27.

What Is The Month Of October On Netflix?
It’s a new month! And you know what that means: It’s time to go through another round of some of the best movies on Netflix’s enormous catalog — from some classics to new offerings — to figure out what you’re watching this month in October. These are all for the month of October 2021, and note that all of these movies are on Netflix already, unless they are noted with an arrival date.
How Many Netflix Original Series Of Note Get New Seasons This Month?
And just like that it was Spooky Season. But there is still plenty of streaming candy to be found. Three existing Netflix original series of note get new seasons this month.
And if that weren’t enough the sequel to Zack Snyder’s Army of the Dead, Army of Thieves, is already almost here with an Oct. 29 debut. Of course, all of this new stuff may end up getting eclipsed by an oldie. Surely, you have heard by now that a certain show about nothing is set to make its big streaming return on Oct. 1.
What Are Some Of The Highlights Of Netflix’S October Release Slate?
The highlights of Netflix’s October release slate include Malcolm X, Titanic, Step Brothers, and Gladiator. There’s a lot of decent stuff hitting Netflix in October: “Leon: The Professional,” “As Good as It Gets,” “A Knight’s Tale,” “Ghost.” But “decent” doesn’t cut it with IndieWire.
That is, if you’re not spending all your time in these early days of fall now binging on “Seinfeld.” Yes, the nine-season New York City wonder hits Netflix today, via one of those nine-figure deals that make us imagine just how mad its home network NBC must be to not have “the show about nothing” on Peacock. Netflix acquired the five-year streaming rights for more than the $500 million pricetag NBC Universal paid to stream “The Office.”
And it’ll be fascinating to see if the popularity of “Seinfeld,” once the king of all TV comedy, can again exceed the cultural clout of “Friends,” “Frasier,” and “The Office” — all shows that have had their stature amplified and their reach extended to new generations of viewers, because of their years on Netflix. (To the point that “Frasier” is now getting a continuation at Paramount+, and “Friends” had an ill-advised reunion special on HBO Max earlier this year.) But we are here to talk cinema, not TV, even if it’s cinema that’s on your TV.
